A bit about Nicola T

Learning is a collaborative process and is maximized when teacher and student listen to each other. Whilst keeping the requirements of any assessments and examinations in mind, I respond to the needs of my students and their preferred mode of learning. I aim to build confident learners and this can only be achieved through respect for my students' preferences. Unlike in many classroom environments, we do not move onto the next topic until the one under way has been mastered. As a GCSE (both Language and Literature) and A Level (English Language) examiner, I am well placed to ensure no learning time is wasted through a lack of focus. With twenty years of experience in the English classroom, I can, of course, teach all aspects of the courses mentioned. Interpreting the requirements of the exam specifications, however, and translating these into skills and knowledge acquisition for my students is where my specific interests lie. Although beyond the first session with a student, I will have planned a lesson that builds from the previous one, I usually begin each session by encouraging my student to set the lesson agenda. This often starts with my student demonstrating his/her strengths and weaknesses through a short writing activity or discussion, reflecting on any difficulties and working together to address them through the rest of the session. This is done through short drills, further discussion and sometimes through a more extended piece of written work. I do, however, try to keep extended writing activities to only once per three or four sessions, which ensures errors are addressed and eliminated rather than reinforced, and that my student has the whole of my attention.
