A bit about Daniella E

Hi! I am a second year medical student at the University of Southampton, passionate about science and working with people. Having studied biology, chemistry and maths at A-level fairly recently, I have a good understanding of the way exam boards work and what they expect of students.

I have worked as a volunteer teaching assistant in a year 8 science class, and also mentored students of various ages to help them understand not only the concepts they struggle with, but also paying close attention to learning styles, studying methods and revision techniques, helping the student gain independent study skills that will help them in the future.

There is plenty of evidence to support the use of active recall and spaced repetition in learning, so I make sure to build my sessions around these core techniques. This means that I review topics periodically with students to ensure information reaches long term memory, and that the student is actively using information and applying it to scenarios, such as exam questions, both as a way of improving retention of information and for me to assess their strengths and weaker areas - remember though, I am not judging! It is my job to help, and I have been where you are now as a student. I understand what it's like to feel like everyone around you is grasping concepts quicker or more naturally, or to get behind due to no fault of your own and feel overwhelmed by the prospect of catching up, or feel like you don't know where to start studying so you don't want to start at all. I keep this in mind when I am teaching, reassuring the student and making sure they know that everyone has these sorts of emotions from time to time.

I'm looking forward to hopefully receiving a message from you!

Daniella :)

It was a very helpful session, in which I understood the explanations very well.
