A bit about Nicki L

I’m a Spanish and French teacher and love languages and travelling. I’ve been teaching in the UK for 15 years and lived in Switzerland for 2 years working as an au pair and in an international boarding school. I love supporting students to achieve their potential in a fun and interactive way whilst learning about the cultures and countries where these languages are spoken. I have three children of my own and understand that learning should be fun! I have been teaching years 7-11 for the past 15 years. I’m most familiar with the AQA exam board but also know the format of Edexcel and can personalise lessons to the exam board you are following! I’ve attended a number of exam board training events as well as specialised MFL training, all of which have helped me keep up to date with teaching pedagogy and have experience in AQA exam marking. I love teaching languages because there is so much to learn. The different skills allow you to communicate in different ways, learning grammar can be really fun and there are always games and fun ways to remember new vocabulary. One of my favourite things is teaching (& learning) about the different cultures in Francophone and Hispanic countries and looking at the similarities and differences between the culture and languages across different countries. Having travelled far and wide, I love sharing my personal experiences too. We usually start with a bit of a recap to see what we have remembered from previous lessons. Followed by some new material being introduced (unless you have requested solely revision), then a variety of tasks using all of the skills, listening, reading, writing and speaking, finishing with a recap of what we have learnt. The format of the lesson will differ for each individual student and their needs / requests. I am just approaching the end of my first year tutoring in the evenings and I LOVE it. It's so different to my day job of teaching 25+ students in a classroom. Tutoring requires a different set of skills, adapting to the individual needs of the student in front of you, it's fun getting to know what helps them, their strengths and areas for development. You get to know the student much better and progress is so much faster!
