A bit about Orla W

As a recent Modern Languages graduate from the University of St Andrews, I am hugely passionate about language learning and would love to pass on this passion to my students through my lessons! As well as achieving a First Class degree outcome, I have over 18 months of experience in both online tutoring and teaching in a classroom. In addition, I have a CELTA certificate in teaching English as a foreign language, which has allowed me to better understand the best methods for teaching any language at any level. I have a wide range of teaching experience in various exam boards and age groups. As well as having helped many pupils achieve top grades in GCSEs and A Levels, I am also familiar with the Scottish curriculum, so can teach National 5s, Highers, and Advanced Highers. Lastly, I have taught a number of beginner students who have had little to no prior knowledge of the language, and within 6 months they have been able to form complex sentences in a range of grammatical structures. The main thing about my lessons is that I will always adapt them to the student's needs, and I don't believe in rushing through topics simply for the sake of ticking them off, preferring instead to spend more time working on different exercises to consolidate what the student has learned, before moving on to a new theme. I almost always make my own teaching materials, such as PowerPoints, comprehension and speaking exercises, and grammar gap-fills. Lastly, I believe that learning a language is about gaining cultural, as well as linguistic, knowledge, therefore I often create lessons around French or German current affairs, customs, and daily life.
