A bit about Julia A

I have been teaching KS3/ GCSE maths for 20 years and particularly enjoy teaching students who lack confidence or who have gaps in their knowledge for whatever reason. I understand the need to foster a love of maths as a life-long skill and specialise in helping students gain confidence. I have a reputation for being fun, but having high expectations, which has in turn enabled many students to exceed their predictions. I am currently teaching the Edexcel Foundation syllabus in school, but have taught Higher level and AQA syllabus in recent months. I use the White Rose syllabus at KS3. I have also taught adult returners at college and understand how brave it is to do a GCSE maths later in life! I start a lesson with some retrieval questions from past topics, so in effect revising as we go along. I would then teach a topic, linking it to previous learning and give students time to watch me apply the knowledge, copy a worked example down and work with me on some practice questions. When I feel a student is ready they have a go themselves!! Lessons finish with a recap of what we have done, and an introduction to where this will lead next lesson. I also set work to be done to follow up this learning. I have been tutoring in addition to school teaching for a few years now and hope to do more tutoring over the next few years. Maths is key to so much and is a requirement for so many education and career paths. I love seeing 'the penny drop' after perseverance from students. I am fun and enthusiastic. I listen to students and care about them. I have high expectations of them in both effort and attitude. I love the fact that I have time to address specific and individual needs during tutoring sessions and can tailor lessons to the students. I am firm, fair and fun! Students enjoy my humour and the fact that I explain things very clearly and carefully. I praise to encourage students. I loved school myself and I also remember struggling with algebra, so I can put myself in students' shoes. It is much easier that you think......! I studied maths at university and completed a PGCE. I currently teach Y7 - Y11 using White Rose for KS3 and Edexcel exam board for GCSE. I am able to adapt to the differences in content and style for different exam boards. I play the piano and violin and enjoy choral singing. In the past I have played netball, tennis and hockey regularly.
