A bit about Ben C

Hello, my name is Ben and I live in Hampshire. I am a friendly and inspiring Maths tutor with 10 years of experience in the UK. I first started mentoring 1st-year students at Kingston University. After University, I worked for a tutoring company teaching all years from primary to secondary. I successfully completed a post-graduate enhancement course in mathematics at St Mary's, Twickenham. I have experience teaching GCSE maths at an independent college in London. I also taught GCSE and CORE maths at Highbury College and most recently functional maths at Carillion. I have also taught students 1-to-1 and in small groups in secondary schools in the UK. I teach Year 5 upwards including GCSE Foundation and Higher. I teach the main exam boards including EDEXCEL and AQA. I plan my lessons according to my student's needs. I usually ask the student his or her previous knowledge of the topic in question. I then explain the concepts involved within the topic and go through worked examples, questioning at each stage the students' understanding. I then ask the student to go through questions themselves with my help wherever necessary. Finally I ask the student to explain the topic thereby underlining their deeper knowledge of the material covered. If time permits, I go through exam questions. Then I conclude the lesson outlining the concepts involved within the topic taught so far. My teaching philosophy is that every child can learn. I believe that students become confused in maths when they miss out on fundamental concepts. It is the tutor's responsibility to uncover these areas and teach them again. With time and patience, the student can understand the material and then be able to progress. My philosophy is that each and every student is unique, and therefore will learn at different rates. It is up to the tutor to match that learning rate and engage with the student by encouraging them. Finally, students learn by different methods, for example by writing down or by listening, or by questioning. I will work out by interacting with the student what works out best and use that learning style in our lesson.
