A bit about Briony S

Educated at Clifton College, Bristol and Edinburgh University, a volunteer placement in Senegal teaching street children helped me realise my passion for working with children in education. I completed my PGCE soon after and spent six years teaching History of Art and MFL at one of London’s top co-ed independent schools. Here I was involved in part of the broader admissions team, interviewing 11+ and 16+ applicants and gaining valuable insight into what schools are looking for. Whilst in this role, I also started providing one-to-one private tuition to London-based families. In 2016, I moved to Maidenhead where, alongside teaching MFL in an outstanding primary and later, a diverse, all-boys comprehensive school, I worked for a successful 11+ tuition company. Here I gained further invaluable insight into the academic rigours of the highly competitive Grammar and Independent schools entrance exams. I am Principal Examiner for Art History Pre-U examinations and Associate Examiner for AQA and Edexcel GCSE MFL speaking assessments, which enables me to offer realistic, informed GCSE mock preparation sessions. In 2021, I relocated to Portishead and left the classroom for good to establish myself independently as full-time tutor and education consultant. I offer tuition to families to boost engagement and attainment in Primary Maths and English, and Modern Foreign Languages to A-Level. I provide a structured and engaging, child-centred programme, unique to each individual student. Many of the families I work with are gearing up for the 11+ and Independent school admissions. However, I also work with vulnerable and SEND students in alternative provision; supporting their reintegration into mainstream education. Many families will require support through the whole process over many months, often years, but sometimes students are moving at short notice and this is where I can offer a ‘targeted essentials’ guidance package, where I offer support in preparation for assessments and interviews. I tailor the level of support to the needs of the family and ensure that I adapt my approach to suit the interests and learning style of the student. I can provide anything from a one-hour consultation, holiday booster course or regular sessions. I combine experience and expertise with a human, student-centred approach. My teaching style is both creative and engaging to ensure the learning experience is both enjoyable and memorable. I absolutely love working with young people of all backgrounds and abilities. I find it extremely rewarding to see their self-confidence grow as they gain a mastery of a subject. I have a PGCE from Bristol University and an MA in Italian and Art History from Edinburgh University. In addition, I have over 10 years experience of working in Mainstream schools - Independent and Comprehensive sectors.
