Enthusiastic PhD in English Literature with over five years teaching!
You can book a free 20 minute, no-commitment introduction with any of our tutors. How does this work?
I have a PhD in English Literature from University of Glasgow on illiteracy and learning difficulty in the nineteenth-century novel. I like long novels, woolly jumpers, and cats.
I am an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Association and I have taught across multiple courses in the department of English Literature at the University of Glasgow, including: 'Writing and Ideology' and 'Poetry and Poetics'. I have worked as a private tutor to both honours and pre-honours English Literature students and I have mentored both undergraduate and postgraduate students during their dissertations.
I have experience tutoring A-level, National 5, Higher, and Advanced Higher and I am familiar with most set texts for these courses. I have worked as an A-level examiner for AQA, so I know how examiners think! While my specialism is Victorian literature, I have also taught Shakespeare, poetry from Chaucer to present day, and a variety of Scottish Literature. I have particular skills in tutoring students with specific learning difficulties, such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, and ADHD. I can help develop study skills and learning plans in addition to working on texts for specific examinations or assessments.
I am passionate about teaching; I enjoying getting to know my students and learning how they work best. I believe in supporting diverse learning styles and working with the student to find a method that will allow them to excel. I am highly adaptable and believe that student-focused tutoring yields the best results both in terms of academic attainment and personal development.
