A bit about Louise R

There is always something new to discover about who we are and what we do as a species - how we differ as well as what we share. I also love the fact that there are few certainties and many different opinions about our mind and behaviour. There are examples of what I'm teaching all around me, whether I'm reading a magazine, watching a film or drinking a coffee and people watching and I can bring the world into our lessons. Psychology is a living subject, not just pages in a textbook or channels on YouTube. That I can work with each student to reach their potential, overcome any barriers to learning and observe their confidence and love of the subject grow. It's a great feeling when you see a student's expression change from one of uncertainty to one of confidence as they grasp theories and concepts they were struggling with. I am your guide through the specification, tackling the most difficult or challenging areas with you so that you can approach your exams positively, as an opportunity to write about what you know. That every session is built around the topics and skills they identify and that we work together to maximise progress. I will ask about hobbies and interests and build them into our sessions so that you can relate what you are learning to your life and give it the depth of meaning you need to achieve the grade you want. I am told I am friendly and good humoured and can make complex ideas appear straightforward. I know my subject really well after teaching it for nearly 30 years so they trust me to point them in the right direction when drafting essays or doing practice papers. I have taught the AQA and Edexcel specifications in schools and since I became a tutor in 2016 I have taught OCR, Scottish Highers and Cambridge International as well as GCSE Psychology. I teach Year 12 and 13 mainly but also younger students who are home-schooled and mature students on Access courses. I learned to read and write when I was very young and realised that education could give me choices that my family, especially the girls, did not have. I decided to work hard and go to university - the first in my family to do so - so I could have a career and be independent. Education really did set me free of the expectations of working class children and I wanted to give that opportunity to other young people. I love reading and sharing ideas so teaching was the perfect career for me as well as being a Director of Sixth Form for a long time where I did my best to encourage young people to seize the opportunities that education can provide. Outside of teaching, I am a guide on Food Tours in Harrogate and York as well as going to live comedy and music events. The rest of my time is taken up with my two bull terriers, Bootsie and Kiki, walking in the countryside and enjoying the great outdoors.
