A bit about Florence O

I have previously worked as a Coaching Mentor/Teaching Assistant (2009/10), private tutor (2010), Supply/Cover Teacher (2015/16), Lecturer & Examiner (2014/15), and Teaching Assistant (2016/17). I like to tailor my teaching to the needs of my students as individuals. I have a lot of experience of traditional lecture style teaching and running exercise based seminars. I am also interested in socio-constructivist teaching methods and can implement lessons designed in this way if preferred. BA English Language & Linguistics MA Phonological Development in Childhood (Psycholinguistics) PhD Neurolinguistic development in infanthood (in progress) I started with an interest in infant development, which evolved into an interest in lifelong development and knowledge acquisition. I love learning and helping others to learn news things and ways of thinking. I once worked with a 21-year-old student, supporting her in her learning and motivation throughout her English Literature A-Level. She had struggled during her previous attempts due to language barriers and having missed a lot of school during her education. She passed her A-Level and told me she felt like getting her English Literature A-Level had changed her life. The change in her confidence and her self-esteem when she realised what she was capable of was amazing to see. Of course, the success was hers, but knowing that my support had made even a bit of a difference really made me feel that I was doing my job right. I like to adapt my lessons to fit student's needs and learning style but I generally find the following format to be effective: - [recap of previous material & questions about any previous homework assignments*] - short exercise to introduce new topic - discussion of introductory exercise & any questions - subject content in more depth, with discussion and opportunities to ask questions as we go along - [longer exercise, if appropriate for the material] - [discussion of longer exercise & any questions] - recap of key points covered in lesson - [set homework assignment to consolidate new knowledge] *Any homework assignments would be marked outside of lesson time, with feedback to be returned by next lesson I specialise in English Language (& Linguistics), but I also tutor English Literature and History. Outside of teaching, I like creating things. Mostly food, but I enjoy gardening, writing, textile work as well. I also love animals of all kinds, walking, climbing, and video games. Humans, and our brains, are really good at learning, and we all have different skills and attributes that we can draw on. If we can each figure out what our own strengths and learning styles are, and how we can apply them to learning, I believe that we can all achieve great things. I am a PhD Linguistics student and a Research Assistant in Education in the UK. I have gathered a lot of teaching experience over the years and am very interested in development, learning, and teaching styles.
