A bit about Anthoni H

I'm Anthoni, and I am a recent Psychology graduate. At university, I specialised in psycholinguistics and child language development. I love to learn all about the underpinnings of languages, and I am bilingual myself (I speak Japanese to a B2/C1 level). I currently tutor GCSE English Language to children aged 13-16 in schools through the National Tuition Programme, in addition to working for an academic language feedback service. I also tutor some adults on a one-to-one basis in subjects such as academic writing and psychology. I love teaching English language because I feel like I am supporting the pupil in establishing a love of reading. When teaching pupils about written extracts and short stories, sometimes I can see a shift in their engagement as they find a way of really placing themselves in the world created by the story. This is a wonderful experience. I also feel that when teaching a pupil about certain topics within English, such as creative writing, you are supplying them with some incredibly important tools for developing their self-expression. Creative writing activities give children the ability to develop their imagination, communication, and English skills all at once; it is a great privilege to be able to support pupils in this development. I hold a 120-hour TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) qualification, a first-class honours psychology degree, and a whole bunch of experience teaching English Language GCSE. Outside of teaching, I spend time working on developing my second language (Japanese), writing poetry, and creating music. I like making sure my lessons are as activity-based and hands-on as possible. I plan my lessons to ensure that while there is time for me to get my teeth into explaining tough concepts, my pupils and I can also spend plenty of time completing activities and tasks together. These tasks may be consolidation based, such putting topics into practice that we have just learnt to help the student remember it, or they may be practice exam questions. These activities will always be tailored to the pupil's exact needs for the topic. I can teach any exam board and any year group - just let me know the relevant info and we can figure it out! I have the most experience teaching to AQA at the moment. I think it's so important to provide pupils with a place they can safely make mistakes and get things wrong about the subject without fear. I want to be able to unpick misconceptions and misunderstandings in a way that supports the pupil to their full potential. I also think it's immensely important to create a space for pupils where they feel it is safe for them to really 'get into' and become enthused in their subject, without fear of what others will think about it.
