A bit about Zoe

At university, I studied History for my undergraduate degree and I am finishing my postgraduate master's degree in International Relations. At A-Level, I studied History, English Literature, 3D Product Design, and took part in EPQ. I am a student at the University of Exeter where I have done two degrees. On top of this I've been involved in sports and general societies ranging from politics to Floorball (similar to indoor hockey). I love reading (both fiction and non-fiction) and played hockey and cricket all through secondary school. Whilst I might not have much tutoring experience, I love learning and really enjoying helping others find their niche and passion because whilst school is not always easy, I believe there is something out there for everyone. Lesson formats would start with a recap/answering questions about the previous session. Next, there would be an introduction of to the sessions content and objectives. We would then begin to go through the content using a variety of mediums and tasks to keep it interesting. This would be interrupted with opportunities to ask questions or have a discussion. The session would end with a brief recap and a conversation about what my student would like to cover in the next session. This could be picked from a list of topics or focus more on something in today's lesson. In Sixth Form, I was a Catch Up reading mentor for girls whose reading ages were significantly lower than their actual ages. I found these sessions rewarding and inspiring. In the space of 9 months, one of my students’ reading age improved by 18 months at three times the average rate! This experience really stuck with me and taught me that many who say they cannot read well or do not enjoy it, have not had the right experiences. Both of my mentees, one for whom English was her third language and the other whom had never received any support or encouragement at home, both suffered from a lack of confidence. Providing a space for them to make and learn from mistakes helped them a great deal as did allowing them to choose their material.
