A bit about Mel Lancley

I have been teaching since 2001 and have been involved in developing qualifications and assessments methods for exam boards for over 20 years. I am an experienced senior examiner for the following subjects: AQA GCSE and A-level Psychology, Pearson- BTEC level 3 Health and Social Care, BTEC tech award Health and Social Care. Pearson- BTEC Applied Psychology AQA GCSE and A-level Sociology I have up to date examiner experience for the following subject Educas GCSE and A-level Sociology Pearson GCSE and A-level Psychology OCR National Health and Social Care BSC (Hon) and MSc Psychology PGCE Social Sciences ( Specialising in 14-19 - KS4 and Post 16/ KS5) British Psychological Society Chartered Psychologist status in teaching We are a team- its that simple! Building confidence is key to success. Developing the skills of the learner will enable the learner to make great strides within their current learning and in their next stage of academia. Working with the learner and guiding their learning is essential and goes hand in hand with working with the learner through encouragement and motivation. For me, it is important that the learning environment is fun and engaging. I work in a student led way- so by finding out how you learn and what your needs are is so very important. Qualifying in 2001, I have enjoyed over 20 years of effective teaching and examining, which has included working with a range of young people. Previous to teaching, I worked with people in a range of settings such as homelessness, mental health, and addiction. This means that not only do I have the experience of being able to teach the subjects, I am able to help you gain better marks due to the application of knowledge that I can help you with. I have extensive experience in supporting learners to obtain higher than their predicted grades. I use a wide range of teaching and learning methods and pride myself on supporting learners and developing confidence. Having supported learners with additional needs, anxious learners, and neurodivergent, I pride myself on supporting young people to break down barriers to help achieve their goals. I have developed numerous revision materials from BBC Bitesize to teaching and revision materials for Tutor2u and CGP books. I have trained teachers and examiners which demonstrates my secure understanding of what is needed to succeed in exams. Psychology, Sociology, and Health and Social Care are everywhere. We live it everyday. This is important as it means that every student is knowledgable about the subjects. Being able to include examples of what we are experiencing in the world and our societies, not only develops your subject knowledge but also allows you to prepare yourself for your next steps be this into further or higher education or the world of work. I love being able to apply theory to the real world such as what prevents people from helping strangers in distress? Why do social inequalities exist?, and applying theory to fiction too-such as using the Marvel Cinematic Universe to study mental health issues and abnormal psychology. My subjects allow for great debate and to carry out your own research which allows you to develop research methods skills and mathematical skills Students love that the sessions are built around their needs and that I listen to their needs and incorporate topics that they find interesting to help understand areas that they are struggling with. Due to my extensive examiner experience, I am able to teach exam skills using practice in every session using real exam questions, model answers, working together to write model answers, and improving not-so-model answers. Students enjoy working mark schemes so that they develop their own understanding that they can then use within their own revision and have confidence in self and peer assessment. They enjoy the debate and stretching understanding through effective questioning and that the lessons focus on the development of self-confidence that occurs through consistent praise and encouragement.
