A bit about Lisa D

I am a secondary school Maths teacher with a degree in Mathematical Science from the University of Limerick, Ireland. I also hold a masters degree in Professional Masters of Education. I have always has a passion with maths and have a very good understanding of it. I have three years teaching experience in a secondary school. Teaching from KS3 right up to A Levels. I work with students to ensure they understand the key skills of maths, this helps students access a range of different topics. I also work with students exposing them to different type of exam questions that they may encounter. I specialise in pure mathematics. My degree at university covered a wide range of mathematics, including Algebra, Data and Probability, Mechanics and Calculus. My lessons start with a starter activity. This is usually a recap on the previous lesson. This allows me to get a better understanding as to what students grasped from the previous lesson. From this, I teach a particular section. Students then practice similar questions, applying what they just learnt. I then work through the solutions, and get the students to finish on an AFL (assessment for learning). This allows me to formatively assess them on what they have learnt in the lesson. I first started tutoring back in 2019. For me, it's not all about teaching maths, I find it very awarding helping students believe that they can do maths. I enjoy getting students to "think outside the box", to get them to release that there is not just one solution to every problem. I enjoy helping students believe that they can do maths and help them to get out of the mindset that they can't. My teaching style is firm but fair. I believe it is my job to give each individual the best chance at doing their absolute best. All I expect and want from my students is that they try their best. I do not accept any less. I see my role as not only providing answers but encouraging students to think for themselves and ask the important questions. I make good relationship with students and model the behaviours I want to see in students through good communication and a genuine interest in understanding other perspectives. For me, it's not all about teaching maths, I find it very awarding helping students believe that they can do maths. When I see a student completing a task they couldn't complete prior to the lesson, it gives me a great sense of achievement. As a secondary school teacher, I strongly believe that building critical skills and tools for lifelong learning is at the heart of what we do as educators. I am committed to giving students the tools they need to see their own value, analyse information and situations, and effectively solve problems. Using real-life examples, discovery learning and thought-provoking questions, I encourage students to consider things from a wider concept and to tackle problems head on. I believe that connecting their education to real-life can contribute to a more holistic learning experience for them. Although I am committed to teaching specific syllabus and curriculum to each individual, I want to go beyond the standardized methods and create a sense of leadership and capability in my students. Students appreciate consistency and fairness. I cater for all in a lesson, making sure that every student can attempt the first question, but also catering for those who wish to challenge themselves. They like that I have high expectations for them regardless of what they might think themselves. They feel comfortable in approaching me and asking me any questions they don't understand. Being a teacher is an incredibly rewarding job. When you sit down with a student and help them understand something, that ‘light bulb’ moment when you see them understand something is just outstanding and so rewarding. Students often have a negative view of Maths and can very easy get bogged with it. I want to provide them with the opportunity to realize the true potential of maths – it is not just completing math questions into your copies and moving onto the next topic. At least two vital skills are being developed: Problem solving and critically analysing something. On a broader level, teaching gives me the opportunity not just to engage individuals on a specific topic, but to shape how they learn, grow, and see the world around them – enriching the lives of individuals. I have Bachelors degree in Mathematical Science and a Professional Masters degree in Education. I use Edexcel exam board. I teach from KS3 right up to and inc. A levels. I enjoy CrossFit, I am very into athletics and been apart of that community. I enjoy spending time in the outdoors, going for hikes, cycles and long walks. My greatest success I've had with teaching is getting my students with low ability in Maths grades they never thought were achievable.
