A bit about Thomas Y

My sessions always involve fun and engaging teaching that allows students to feel relaxed. Sessions usually begin with a few quick games and challenges to support the recall of certain skills. For Maths sessions, the main teaching will revolve around consolidation skills and problem-solving. For English sessions, I will be working with the child to share ideas and develop vocabulary, whilst modelling new techniques for the children to incorporate in their writing. I am currently a Year 6 teacher in a fantastic primary school in Somerset. I have taught across Upper Key Stage Two and Lower Key Stage Two. I have a fantastic understanding of the Maths and English curriculum and the milestones that children should be reaching at different stages. I have a passion for teaching these subjects and I love teaching them in an exciting way which helps to build a child's confidence. I have been teaching across Key Stage Two for a number of years. I have completed a Primary PGCE at Bath Spa University and have Qualified Teacher Status. I have a first-class degree in Law from the University of Reading. As well as having teaching experience, I am a marker for the Year 6 end-of-year SATs. I believe that there is a clear distinction between a tutor and somebody's subject teacher. As a tutor, I aim to support the children with areas that they identify as weaknesses and help them to believe that they can build their confidence in those areas. I like to see myself more like a mentor (someone they feel comfortable talking to in an informal/unpressurised environment). Sports and music. I love playing and watching sports, such as football, lacrosse and athletics. I am a singer/songwriter. For the last few years, I have taught in Year 6, however, I have taught across all of KS2 in years 3-6. In addition to this, I am currently a marker for the Year 6 SATs. Maths - I enjoy the challenges that maths presents. Reasoning and problem-solving questions allow the students to deepen their understanding. English - I love seeing the progress that students make and how they develop their writing styles. I usually model certain techniques and discuss my approach to writing, then students will use this to generate their own ideas.
