A bit about Andy D

I'm a former professional engineer who worked across almost the whole of the energy sector - nuclear, coal, oil & gas - as well as with a range of other sectors. I subsequently worked in Management Consultancy and IT. I've worked with people of many cultures throughout my career, and have been responsible for professional development and training of junior staff. I'm recently retired. I have experimented previously with teaching. I found I hugely enjoyed working with children of all ability levels, but disliked the grind of classroom management. I found huge satisfaction in seeing a pupil grasp a concept that they'd initially struggled with, and believe I have some talent for engaging demotivated boys in particular. A change in personal circumstances meant I had to return to Industry - my wife was made redundant, and I hence needed a higher salary. As to tutoring experience, I'm working with a "social Enterprise" group in Slough, providing support up to GCSE for small groups (2-6), as well as providing support to pupils to raise their A level grades I genuinely love my subject - I don't think that there's any better platform for a developing mind than an understanding of how the universe works - which, at core is what physics is about! Physics (GCSE, A level and IB) and General (GCSE); also will tutor Business Studies and Engineering My deep specialism is in Nuclear Engineering - nuclear physics, thermodynamics, stress and heat transfer I bend over backwards to make sure my pupils are fully engaged - whether I'm teaching one-one or small group (I particularly like the latter). In particular, I teach by use of practical examples - I based one recent lesson around a video clip of a plane being launched from an aircraft carrier, got my pupil to calculate the necessary power for the catapult, and how much the aircraft carrier speeded up when the plane returned! I'm fairly new to tutoring, but have spent a year actually teaching Physics defines how the universe works - and also much of modern technology. Unfortunately, most of our kids have been convinced that it's a subject tor nerds with huge brains. It isn't. It's about describing everyday phenomena, Everyone can understand basic - GCSE - physics. Everyone that's going on to a STEM based degree can deal with A level physics. And better than that - they can enjoy it! Interactive. Challenging - if there's one thing I overdo it's "so - why do you think "x"" or "and why is that"? I question continually - forna teacher it let you do two things - find out what they've understood, and get them to stretch it.
