A bit about Graham S

My favourite aspect of any teaching is reaching the point where things suddenly fall into place for the student. I like to approach maths as solving puzzles rather than memorising procedures; there are lots of ways to approach it and so I try different approaches, whether algebraic, visual, or practical until one of them makes things click Every student is different and I adapt my approach to cater to needs of each, but always with the goal of developing real foundational understanding that not only enables students to achieve the best exam results, but which they can retain and build on in the future. I try to help students build an intuitive grasp of what they're doing rather than memorising formulas by rote and so on, and try to relate everything we work on back to fundamental concepts and ground it in its applications. At school I excelled in maths and further maths; I continued studying maths as part of my mechanical engineering degree and applied it frequently during in my career in engineering. I also have several years' experience volunteering as a maths tutor for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, as well as experience running training courses in engineering concepts.
