A bit about Esme C

I have been tutoring KS2, KS3, GCSE (AQA and Edexcel) and A-Level English (AQA and Edexcel) for four years; all of my GCSE and A-Level pupils have gained at least one number grade after working with me. I have extensive SEN experience, both online and in-person, and am committed to ensuring equality in education. I am a recently graduated MA student in Creative Writing with a BA in English Literature. I am currently in the process of applying for a PhD in Creative Writing to further my education. I believe the best way to work as a tutor is to look at the individual needs and strengths of a pupil in order to assess what works best for them. I enjoy a multimedia approach to learning due to my interest in film and pupils have responded positively to this. Fundamentally, I believe fun and learning are not the antitheses of each other; they can coexist and pupils I have tutored in the past have made progress while developing their love of the subject. My lesson will begin with a starter based on the previous lesson's work before moving onto the main body of the lesson; this is crucial as it is important to measure student understanding and adjust the lesson plan based on the information retained from the previous lesson. For example, if they haven't quite grasped the topic from the last lesson, then we can recap those rather than powering on ahead with new information which might be overwhelming if there are gaps in knowledge. Then, after the starter, we will move onto the main body of the lesson where the new learning takes place before finishing with a summary. This structure works well for consolidating learning. I believe in a hands-on approach to learning and will allow pupils to try things for themselves wherever possible to engage them with the learning. Also, it is important for me that pupils individual needs are met so I like to structure my lessons around the hobbies and interests of an individual pupil; for example, I have Marvel, sports and fashion themed lessons! Pupils will engage with the hobby they enjoy and hopefully find learning more fun! I love my subject and I hope my pupils will learn to love it during our time together. I love reading, my favourite author is Jane Austen, and writing - I am currently writing a novel and I regularly write poetry. Alongside this, I love filmmaking and have previously had my scripts turned into short films. I also love going to the cinema and reviewing films online. Additionally, I love the theatre and attend plays, musicals or operas as much as I can! I have experience teaching both the AQA and Edexcel syllabus at GCSE and A-Level. Therefore, I have extensive knowledge of the exam boards marking schemes and expectations. At GCSE, I have tutored Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, An Inspector Calls, Jane Eyre, the Power and Conflict poetry anthology, Lord of The Flies, Frankenstein, A Christmas Carol and An Inspector Calls. Although, I have read many texts in my academic study and am happy to tutor other texts. At A-Level, I have tutored Othello, A Streetcar Named Desire, unseen poetry, The Great Gatsby and The Life and Loves of a She-Devil. I am also happy to tutor other texts if pupils are studying alternative novels, plays or poetry. I achieved a 2:1 in my English Literature BA from the University of Sussex and a Merit in my Creative Writing MA from the University of Sussex. I also have a TEFL (198 Hours) qualification and extensive experience with EAL students. I have studied every Shakespeare text in-depth as part of my degree with a particular focus on Macbeth, Othello, Hamlet, Much Ado About Nothing and Romeo and Juliet.
