A bit about Miss Coggan

We'll start with a review of the previous lesson's learning, either in the form of a short multiple choice quiz, cloze procedure, or pre-planned questioning to ensure that all necessary concepts are secure before building upon the learning. The main body of the lesson will involve me modelling a particular skill or concept, the student having a go with my support, and then independent application of the skill by the student. We'll conclude with a review of the lesson's learning to ensure that the skill has 'stuck'. I try to vary the activities used, particular with younger pupils, so that they are fully engaged with the learning. However, each lesson will follow the same structure to minimise cognitive load. I have been working in education since 2011, first as a one-to-one English tutor at a secondary school, then as a primary school teacher in both KS1 and KS2 (though predominantly KS2). I have taught Year 6 for 5 years, so am familiar with the expectations of the end of KS2, and the skills and knowledge needed to do well in the KS2 SATs. My previous role in a secondary school, where I tutored pupils from year 7 - year 10, means that I am aware of the standards pupils are expected to reach in KS3. I have over a year's experience as a Special Educational Needs Coordinator, which has afforded me more detailed knowledge of teaching strategies that can be employed to support children with additional needs. I am currently working as both a KS2 teacher and a tutor for the National Tuition Programme, teaching small groups of year 4 and year 5 pupils in writing. Students I am currently tutoring tell me that they are 'thankful' to be tutored by me, as they feel that their sessions are helping them to be more confident in their lessons. They enjoy that I have taken the time to get to know them as individuals, and refer to me as 'firm, but fair and fun'. My students appreciate my high expectations along with my personable, cheerful manner. I am able to form effective relationships quickly, thus increasing the effectiveness of the tuition. Children don't learn from teachers who they don't like and who they feel don't like them!
