A bit about Kate A

I have been teaching in secondary schools for 22+ years and have extensive experience of both History and English at GCSE and KS3. I have been tutoring online and in person for a number of years and specialise in History, English and Study Skills. My results consistently show above average levels of pupil progress. I am experienced in teaching SEN and EAL students and have completed a 180 hour TEFL course. I am an examiner for EDUQAS GCSE History and have experience teaching and tutoring at all levels from Primary to A-Level in Eduqas, Edexcel and Aqa. I have also taught AQA and Edexcel English. I have delivered workshops on the science of learning, study skills and emotional agility and build this knowledge into my lessons. Many students come to tutoring as they lack confidence and self-belief. Teaching them how to revise as well as content and exam technique is an integral part of my lessons. In my last set of externally assessed exam results, 79% of my History students gained Grade 5 and above. 95% achieved 4+. To put this into context in the school I teach, only 19% of students gained both Grade 5+ in English and Maths that year. You can see that with high expectations and strong support, I help students to make exceptional progress. I also have an above average number of students gaining a Grade 7-9. Building relationships with my students; seeing them achieve things that they didn't think were possible and those 'lightbulb' moments when they make a breakthrough are worth their weight in gold! This depends on the learner and the parents and what they want to achieve. I usually start with some revision of prior learning before introducing a new concept. Students will have lots of chance to practice under my guidance, using a variety of teaching methods. Revisiting new concepts over time and checking for understanding are essential to ensuring that learners truly understand a new idea.I use OneNote to record work and comment and to share my resources with pupils for them to use after the lesson. Tutoring is about tailoring the lesson to the student so the format of the lesson will depend on how a pupils wants to learn.
