A bit about Katie J

Hi! My name is Katie, I am 25 and I live in Lancashire. My passion for science, particularly biology, has been a big part of my life since I was a child. I completed my undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences with my project in bioenergy. I then completed a masters degree in Digital Communication focusing on science media, aligning with my career goal of working in medical sales. I secured a post-graduate job in the technical department of a large food distribution centre, ensuring our company adheres to food safety legislation. The pandemic hit in 2020, and I left on maternity leave with my son in 2021. It was during this extended period of time at home that I began tutoring online, intitally just to A-level students. I quickly rekindled my love and passion for science and learning and, following a period of consistent growth in my tutoring business, decided to resign from my job to follow my career aspirations as a science tutor online. Currently, I am working regularly with two tutoring organisations as well as my own cohort of students. The session price on my profile is fixed, but I do offer reduced prices to reflect the level of learning (e.g. lower price for KS3, GCSE). I plan my lessons for each individual student before each of our scheduled lessons. I use an interactive note-taking software to design and prepare the backbone of a guided lesson, including pre-obtained images and pre-prepared graphs and tables. Throughout the lesson, I will work through the document with my student and annotate as I explain the content as we go along. As each topic comes to a close, I add in a series of relevant questions to maintain direct interaction, monitor progress and ensure full understanding. I use my own intuition to determine areas of weakness for each student, but I also ask for their thoughts and preferences regarding the next lesson. This helps to maintain a good level of interest and allow the student to prepare for exams or gain confidence in certain topics A common piece of feedback that I have received from my students over the past two years is my approachable nature and ability to relate to each of my students. Parents have expressed their gratitude to me for rebuilding their child's interest and willingness to learn both in the classroom and in wider learning. I find that being young and having completed very similar exams and content myself, I am able to connect with my students and share advice and revision tips. I am able to identify areas of weakness not only in a student's academic ability, but their personality too. I alter my lesson delivery style to suit different personalities - asking more questions and increasing engagement with less confident students and praising participation to gradually build willingness. I have a BSc in Biological Sciences from the university of Manchester. Here, I studied an array of modules including immunology, zoology, microbiology and lab studies and techniques. I completed my final year project on renewable sources of energy and their viability as a long-term energy source. As part of this project, I had to deliver my project to a non-professional audience and evaluate their understanding. I presented my project to several primary school classes and received great feedback and results! I have an Msc in digital communication during which I focused on 'Science in Media' and how pharmaceutical companies could be more transparent with the general public. I achieved 3 A's at A-level (Biology, Business and Psychology) and 11 A*-B in my GCSEs including A*AA in biology, chemistry and physics respectively. My favourite thing about being a tutor is the ability to really boost the student's confidence and therefore passion towards biology and science in general. Especially in the current times where a large volume of the current cohort of secondary student's education has been disrupted by COVID regulations, students often lack confidence and sometimes interest in their subjects. The ability to work 1-2-1 with students allows me to identify strengths and weaknesses and structure my lessons accordingly, without the pressures of a large class. I have noticed over the past two years that as students become more confident and overcome the doubts through 1-2-1 sessions, they are more willing to contribute in the classroom environment. Building confidence and achieving goals that were once just a desire are the best aspects of tutoring.
