A bit about Alun L

I studied Physics and Electronics at university before working in IT and software development for 20 years. I decided to move into tutoring in 2021. I have always enjoyed communicating the knowledge I've gained over the years, and tutoring is a wonderful way of doing that whilst also providing a service to others. I specialise in Maths and Physics. I completed a Physics degree with the Open University in 2015 and have completed the level 1 and 2 modules of a Maths degree. I love to think and read about the beautiful world of numbers and find ways of relating this knowledge to the real world. It's amazing how abstract ideas have such direct connections to everyday life. My favourite thing about being a tutor is that it connects me to people that want to learn. I have been tutoring since early 2021, working with a range of different students, from junior to sixth form. It's such a joy to see these young people grow in their understanding and appreciation of the subjects I teach. I first started tutoring in early 2021, teaching children from families that I knew, some of whom were home schooling. I taught mathematics to seven children from a family of nine, ranging in ages from five to sixteen. I continue to teach three children from a family of four, covering KS2 and KS3 general science and KS3 and KS4 mathematics. I teach online as well as in person, a mix of sixth formers doing A-level physics or BTEC engineering, as well as a group of GCSE maths candidates. My teaching style is fairly informal and relaxed. I allow students to ask questions and comment on what they're learning, because I want them to enjoy and appreciate the subject. When teaching online, I use a whiteboard app, and when in person I use a large A4 notebook to illustrate concepts. For technical subjects like mathematics, it's essential to work through problems, so I major quite heavily on this. Understanding comes by doing, not just simply rote learning. My lessons are all tailored to the individual needs of the student. Some lessons are simply working through past papers, while others begin with a presentation of textbook material followed by exercises. There may be a 'sandwich' of me presenting and students responding, just for variety. For in-person science lessons, some small-scale experiments are also possible. I like to conclude with offering the student the opportunity to feed back on the lesson and suggest what they might like to consider for the next one. I have two first-class honours bachelor's degrees - one in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from the University of Portsmouth, and one in Physics from the Open University. I have also completed the first two years of a three-year Maths degree with the Open University. I also have 20 years of experience in the world of work seeking to apply my knowledge to real-world problems, which has taught me a lot. My experience so far has been mainly with year 10-13 students, though I have also taught some younger pupils. My main experience with Physics is with AQA, whereas GCSE has been with OCR, Edexcel and Eduqas. I'm confident though, that I have enough knowledge to learn to work with the other main boards.
