A bit about Kirby D

I completed my degree in History (focusing on international development and social and cultural movements in the late twentieth century), but I loved my English Literature studies at A Level. Since graduating, I have maintained a strong interest in British history and politics, and (admittedly after a bit of practice) rediscovered my love of reading for entertainment and not just analysis. At the end of the day, I always seize new opportunities to learn. So, if there's something else we can explore together, just say the word! I make a point of always getting to know my students personally as we start our learning journey together. This means that there's no one lesson format that I adhere to strictly, because each of my classes is specifically tailored to each unique and individual student. In general, we'll set areas to work on and then I will use a combination of PowerPoint and other interactive presentation software to engage with each lesson topic. I first started tutoring to help out families in my local area during the first school closures as part of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the early days, this meant that I was "teaching" students material for the first time rather than just consolidating their existing knowledge. This was a really exciting opportunity for me to get proactively involved with parents and teachers alike, creating a great support network during all the educational disruption. The main thing for me is that a teacher or tutor's excitement and enthusiasm for a subject always fundamentally shines through. For this reason, I always take the time to uncover new or exciting facts and information about each topic to help make sure that my students are as engaged and motivated to learn as I am! One of the main reasons that I like getting to know my students personally is so that I can make the material relevant to them as individuals by creating links to their interests and hobbies. At the end of the day, it's about finding what works for each individual student. Some students learn visually, whereas others learn by actively engaging and explaining the topics themselves. I always make sure to work around each person, so my teaching style is ultimately one of flexibility and adaptability.
