A bit about Kathryn S

I have 11 years teaching experience from EYFS to Year 6 and 1 year tutoring experience in school. I embed learning through small chunks, games and memory quizzes to not only introduce new concepts, but master and retain previous ones. My lessons are split into "chunks" to maximise the time and to keep engagement at an optimum level. I believe learning should be fun and varied and I have an enormous bank of resources and ideas to keep my learners engaged. I believe that learning should be active from the moment a lesson begins so we will usually start with a "Do now" to get the brain warmed up. I adopt an "I do- you do" approach when learning a new concept. For this, I will model the "steps to success" and then give the child the opportunity to apply this straight away with my support. This way the child is an active learner from the beginning of the lesson. I have excellent subject knowledge of all three Primary Key Stages which ensures precise understanding of a child's prior knowledge and next steps. I believe that a confident child will be more resilient when faced with challenge or a problem to solve so I use lots of positivity and praise to build a growth mindset. My teaching style is flexible to meet the needs of the child's learning style. I always put the child at the centre of the learning and my experience allows me to quickly change pace, pitch or direction as needed through continuous assessment for learning. I started tutoring in schools in Feb-July 2022. In this face to face role I would take children in small groups or 1:1. I would assess the children, identify gaps and ask the child where they lacked confidence. From there I would use small achievable targets to track progress and build the child's confidence in the subject. In this role I tutored: Year 6 for SATs Year 2 for SATs Year 3 for Maths and English Year 5 for SATs Students respond well to my positive energy, nurturing personality and lots of praise. I always try to make my praise specific and detailed, so that the student knows exactly what they are being praised for as this helps them to make accelerated progress and also builds their confidence. I hope that students love my warmth and patience. I am a parent myself, so I have a good understanding of how important it is that our children feel safe and valued in order to learn.
