A bit about Kirsten H

I am currently an incoming 3rd year Medical Student studying at the University of Nottingham. Outside of medicine, teaching has always been one of my biggest passions which is what prompted me to take up tutoring part-time. It has helped me fulfil the love that I have of imparting knowledge to the people around me! It is always such a pleasure watching students go from absolutely despising a subject to completely enjoying it and this is something I take pride in whenever I take on a new student. With my specialty focus being in GCSE Maths, the greatest success was when I had a student who started out at a Grade 1, work his way up to a Grade 5 by the end of the year and actually finished his GCSE Exams stating that Maths was one of his more preferred subjects. I enjoy getting to meet a variety of students every year from different backgrounds. It is incredible being able to create a bond with each of my students and understanding more about their personality and learning style, which helps me as a tutor figure out better methods to help their understanding. I enjoy the flexibility that I have as a tutor, constantly being challenged to adapt my teaching style to better suit my students needs. My main specialty is GCSE Maths at both the Foundation and Higher Tiers. Majority of the students that I have a tutored over the last 2 years, have all been for Maths which has allowed my confidence to grow in teaching the subject I truly believe that each student has their own unique and individual way of learning which is why I as a tutor strongly believe in the importance of me being flexible and adaptive to allow my students to make the most out of their learning experience. My teaching style will continuously adapt and change depending on my student's requirements to allow my student to engage whole-heartedly in a lesson. I like to focus on understand foundation concepts well and then using this knowledge to apply it to various exam-style questions Using the introductory meeting with my student, I will use that time to find out what areas in the topic the student would like to focus on. From there, I like to structure a weekly plan to allow both me and the student to see the way I intend to carry out their teaching. My lessons usually begin by introducing the topic and asking the student about their pre-existing knowledge. From there, majority of lesson time is spent understanding the concepts surrounding the topic. I like to use various demo questions/ worked out examples to first-hand allow my students to see how we apply the concept to actual questions. Once I believe my student has understood the concepts well, we will usually work through a question bank or worksheet together to give my student the opportunity to check their understanding. I also like to set a small weekly homework task to allow my student to refresh their knowledge in between lessons.
