A bit about Louise B

I love being outdoors and am a keen naturalist with birds being a lifelong love. I keep hens and grow as much fruit and veg as I can. When not outside, I love books and would spend a lot more time reading if I didn't have two energetic children to keep me busy! I also play in a community samba band and perform at carnivals, festivals and local events. After university, I gained my TEFL qualification which enabled me to teach English abroad. I originally intended to use it merely as a way to fund my travels but I absolutely loved the course and felt completely at home in front of a class. When I trained to be a primary teacher, I found that even more rewarding. I also turned out to be very good at it too! I have a BA Hons in English Literature from Southampton University and a PGCE from Canterbury Christ Church University. I am a former primary teacher with 17 years experience. I taught from Y1 to Y6 and was the English Subject Leader for many years. Over the last two years, I have been running small group and 1:1 sessions for home educated children in English and Science. I have one child in school and I home educate the other. That means I am very experienced, both personally and professionally, in a wide range of mainstream and alternative teaching and learning styles. I like to get to know a student, make a connection and find out what excites them. If there is a relaxed, trusting atmosphere then progress is inevitable. If a child is anxious or fearful of making mistakes then very little learning can take place. I specialise in teaching reading and writing from basic phonics to higher level year 6 writing skills. I have a lot of experience in teaching children with SEN, particularly neurodivergent children. I also have a lot of experience in SAT's preparation as I taught in year six for several years. I teach all year groups from R to Year 6. I always start with finding out about a child's passions and then using them as a way to hook the children's interest and attention. That then means I can teach English skills in a meaningful context. I use a mixture of short games and activities to review and practice skills then I like the bulk of the lesson to have a deeper, more meaningful focus with connection running between a set of lessons.
