A bit about Malaika S

Hi! I'm Malaika, and have fifteen years of experience teaching writing, reading, critical thinking, philosophy, performing arts, dance, and drama at university level. I love the performing arts and often use examples from these in my lesson plans to help explain a key idea or moment from history. I specialise in writing and teach English, and English grammar. Writing strengths include: grammar, academic essays, poetry, and creative writing. English: I specialise in Shakespeare, as well as English and American literature from the 19th and 20th Centuries. I'm a big fan of Jane Austen, Herman Melville, George Orwell, and Walt Whitman. Geography: I specialise in present-day study of issues including immigration, environmental and green movements, American government, UK politics, EU government, and social study of religion, class, economics and educational opportunity in the EU, Asia, and North America. I have travelled extensively to almost every continent, and bring a love of different cultures to my approach. History: World history including ancient civilisations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome; American history; African and South African history; and European history. I hold a Post-Graduate Teaching Certificate of Higher Education, gained in 2011 from Falmouth University. I earned my PhD in performance, looking at improvisational methods in outdoor dance. I hold an MA in Devised Theatre, and another MA in Liberal Studies. During this degree I spent several months in Japan studying Japanese culture, arts, zen Buddhism, and martial arts.
