A bit about Anthony

I first started tutoring in Year 1997 when I was still studying Secondary Five in Hong Kong. I still remembered the first two pupils being tutored was studying Secondary Three. I mostly taught Maths at that time. In the course of one-year tutoring, gradual improvement in calculation could be observed. This was the first time I gained in the sense of satisfactory from teaching. Starting from that time, I seriously thought being a Teacher as my future career. To increase my exposure and working experience, I continued my Part-time tutoring for an increasing number of students, from junior Form to senior Form, covering the subjects Maths, Chemistry and Science, at the same time I was working hard and striving for a university place during my matriculation. Fortunately, after completion of my Bachelor’s degree of Science and Postgraduate Certificate in Education, I started my teaching career in an international school in Year 2004. Before I start a tutorial lesson, especially for new students, I need to aware the knowledge level of the students, and which topics in a subject they do not learn well. Thus, I have to communicate and listen to their learning expectation and let them know about my teaching planning. Then, I prepared the learning materials regarding to their need. In the first tutorial, I would briefly introduce a small section in a chapter and let them try to answer some questions to evaluate their actual learning level. Based on the mistakes and misconception, I will explain to them and arrange to do more questions in the same area until the students become more familiarize with the concepts and answer the questions well. This is the way of tutoring in respect to small sections under each chapter. After going through a chapter, or up to a topic, summative assessment such as quizzes, tests are to be done in regular time intervals. The content in the assessment is accumulative to ensure that students can handle with many chapters, or even many topics in a single assessment similar to external exams like GCSE, GCE AL exams. Students enjoy my tutorials since they found no communication barrier between us. There was an impressive experience a few years ago that, one of my Chemistry students got an excellent result in Chemistry in the external exam (remark: he got level 6, level 7 is the highest) and he was admitted by his preferred university finally. By one chance, he texted me and thanked for my patience and passion contributed to teaching him Chemistry. He said he had totally no basic knowledge in Chemistry at the beginning. However, owing to my eager to listen, to speak and to encourage, he could perceive my enthusiasm and caring to the students, and this motivated him so much and he was willing to spend time in studying Chemistry well. My role model of teaching gave him a big impact and he told me that he aspired to be a science teacher because of my teaching style. I love long-distance running such as Marathon, outside of teaching. From my point of view, it is not easy to complete a long-distance running, such as 15 km, +20km running. In addition beneficial to my health especially cardio-function and relieving stress, long-distance running reinforces my attitude of persistence. Since long-distance running demands for sustainable and accumulative training, in the process of which my heart of determination and patience are enhanced. This advantages me so much in other aspects of daily life.
