A bit about Shanaz H

I completed my PGCE in English (Secondary) earning the QTS status giving me a specialisation in English at KS3 and KS4. I have taught 21st Century OCR and AQA ranging from the texts: Of Mice and Men, An Inspector Calls, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Othello, Merchant of Venice, Conflict cluster (both examining boards), and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. I have a particular interest in poetry which was founded when I was introduced to the poetry anthologies in KS4. I had my first poem published when I was in year 11, and have been writing ever since with 5 pieces works published and my poetry collection 'beyond the moon' to be published soon by AM. This has influenced my teaching with poetry being my favourite to teach whether this is teaching a poem, or creative writing! Furthermore, I have a strong passion for Philosophy and Religious Studies taking the subjects to degree level and earning a First Class. I find breaking down often complicated ideas into simple forms satisfying, as well as having those vigorous contemplative discussions intrinsically worthwhile. I first started tutoring 3 years ago when Covid - 19 left an undeniable mark where many pupils struggled with missing lesson time and a lack of personalised face-to-face teaching with the stress of their upcoming GCSE exams. I taught notoriously challenging texts like Shakespeare's 'Macbeth' that was difficult to unravel alone in a bedroom with no help from peers or teachers. From this, I discovered that I loved tutoring 1:1. I have progressed in this when completing my PGCE year working at Queen Elizabeth school for Boys' who are a selective grammar school that have been consistently among the best schools in England as well as recently receiving the best state school in England by the Sunday Times and Heartlands High School who has on average 80% of pupils as SEND and EAL. Moreover, I have taken on tutoring opportunities since my PGCE year, and am keen to take on more. With the first pupil I tutored, I recognised he was showcasing dyslexic characteristics when speaking and writing, and after a process of deliberation with the parents the pupil was diagnosed before their GCSE exams with implemented support by their school. From this, I helped the pupil not only in the increased grades of two levels for English, but the pupils' self-confidence increased in their communication skills amongst other subjects and in expressing themselves in the world outside. To me, tutoring touches a pupils' life not just in the texts studied, but preparing them to life outside of the classroom and maximising their opportunities. Working with a pupil increases a personal relationship of learning about their likes, dislikes, personal difficulties as well as strengths in the subject that teaching in front of a classroom with 30 pupils does not satisfy. With this personalised communication, I can tailor my lessons for one child instead of fitting a lesson to 30 kids because not all kids learn the same way!
