A bit about Pia

An enthusiastic teacher of science and mathematics with a special interest in how students learn and retain information. I am passionate about my subject and enjoy teaching through storytelling. Engaging students in their learning is paramount to their success. It is priceless to see a child's smile when he or she understands it. I believe that each student learns differently and I strive to create a classroom environment that is conducive to every student's learning style. I want to create meaningful and engaging lessons that allow students to explore topics, gain knowledge, and apply it to their lives. I use storytelling as a way to bring the material to life and to make it more memorable. I specialize in teaching science and maths, and I believe that these subjects are the building blocks for a successful future. I understand the importance of making these subjects accessible and enjoyable for students, so that they can develop the confidence to pursue the opportunities that are available to them. For example, by using stories to explain mathematical equations, I can help students to better understand the concepts and make them more interested in learning the subject. It is similar to building a house. You need the right foundations in order to construct the rest of the building, and without strong foundations, the building will not stand up to the test of time. In the same way, teaching science and maths is the foundation for a successful future, and without a strong understanding of these subjects, students won’t be able to build on their knowledge and pursue the opportunities that await them. An experienced teacher and now online tutor with a full-time PhD course, I teach KS3 Maths, Science, GCSE Physics, GCSE Chemistry, GCSE Biology, GCSE mathematics, A-level Biology, A-Level Chemistry, and GCSE Combined Science, and also tutor students preparing for their 11+ entrance exams. Research and learning are my passion, and I work on pedagogy to find new ways to help students in their learning. To date, my GSCE and A-level students have improved their grades and confidence within a 6-week to 4-month period of tutoring. My GCSE students have improved a minimum of one grade within 9 months. hold a full enhanced DBS and have taken several safeguarding courses. in short, I am a PhD student at Strathclyde with 15 years experience of teaching in the Midlands and online and passionate about education and sharing knowledge with young minds. The first five minutes of my lesson are spent chatting about how the week has been, what's been happening, and anything interesting or relevant I need to know. The questions I often introduce are based on each topic, and these are quite thought-provoking, as they improve confidence, trust, and communication. I will focus my attention on the areas the student feels they need the most support in during each lesson. Throughout all lessons, critical thinking skills, analytical reasoning, mathematical reasoning, and scientific reasoning are critically emphasized, and context and perspective are often included as well. The foundation of learning and understanding is logic and critical reasoning, which I find underpins all subjects and elements. Thus in brief students are pre-assessed on the area of focus identified by them and then with student engagement plan for a series of sessions is created and the process is repeated with other areas of focus with added post-intervention assessment to ensure sustainable progress is made. I started tutoring while I was at university for my undergraduate degree and carried on working part-time in tutoring till my master's. once I started teaching in the Midlands I only tutored over the weekends for a few hours but at the start of the pandemic, I moved on to more hours of tutoring. Outside of teaching, I am passionate about fitness and research. I enjoy learning about the different ways to stay healthy and fit and the science behind why certain methods work. I also enjoy researching different topics and learning more about the world and the people in it. Doing this has allowed me to gain a better understanding of how our physical and mental well-being are intertwined, and how small changes can have a big impact on our overall health and happiness. Kiera Cass, the author of The Selection series, wrote: “Live your life. Be happy as you can be, let go of the things that don't matter, and fight.” My teaching philosophy is to foster learning through collaboration, inspiring students to become life-long learners. To achieve this, I believe in creating an engaging and supportive classroom environment, one where students feel safe to take risks, express their ideas, and challenge each other. I also strive to provide students with meaningful and relevant learning experiences, as well as the tools they need to become self-directed learners. Of course, I also believe that a healthy dose of sarcasm, a few bad jokes, and a whole lot of puns are essential for a successful learning experience! I create a learning environment that is both engaging and challenging. I strive to make my lessons interactive and meaningful, and I use real-world examples to help the students connect the material to their lives. To do this, I develop a variety of activities and assessments that are designed to help the students learn effectively and retain the knowledge long-term. I also make sure to adjust my teaching approaches to meet the needs of my students and the A-Level curriculum. This may include providing extra resources, breaking down complex concepts, and creating activities that help students practice and apply what they have learned.
