A bit about Sarah M

So what inspired me to become a teacher…. I decided that I would pursue a career which allowed me to work around my own children and made the decision that this would be within education. I originally wanted to teach primary but as soon starting work at a secondary school, I realised that was the age I wanted to teach at. I started by completed my level 2 and 3 as a teaching assistant and went to work as an SEN TA in a secondary school. It was here and when I walked in my first maths lesson that I said to myself “this is what I want to do!” I saw how rewarding it was to encourage and engage pupils so that they could enjoy and achieve within the maths subject, how pupils who struggle can be successful with the correct strategies and how proud they can be when they get something they didn’t think they could, right. Maths is fabulous and interesting and it is everywhere, all around us. Everyones deserves the opportunity to see what they could learn and achieve from such a huge subject. I have a first class honours mathematics degree from the university of Wolverhampton and QTS and PGCE teacher qualifications. I am enhanced DBS checked as I work within a secondary school currently. I also have teaching assistant qualifications level 2 and 3 and gained experience with SEN pupils as a TA in secondary school. My name is Sarah Morris. I teach Maths at a secondary school (which just happens to be the school I went too!) and teach both KS3 and KS4. I can also teach A-level with my degree. I made the decision to go into a career with education as I had 3 young children of my own. I wanted to work around their school hours. It was once I was a qualified TA and working in a secondary school that I decided I wanted to teach maths. I wanted to make a difference to pupils thoughts and opinions on the maths subject and show them how engaging and interesting the subject could be. After 2 years working in school I took the plunge and left to attend full time university as a mature student (That first day was rather scary….!). I remember walking into a mechanics class and thinking (RUN!) but i didn’t and over the 3 years I gained even more appreciation for a subject that for some pupils feel that If they don’t understand it they should just give up. But NO! You don’t need to give up, sit down and look for more methods until you have found the strategies that are best for you. We can all do it. I achieved a C in GCSE but now I have a Mathematics degree. I believe that something we have to work hard for and becoming successful at, is the most rewarding to us.
