A bit about Vanessa F

Languages are something I have grown up with – my mum was German so I spoke German before I spoke English. I grew up in England and am a native English speaker. I graduated with a BA Hons degree in French and Spanish from Bristol University and moved into a career in international finance. After 3 years living in Lyon, France with my family we returned to the UK five years ago. I passed my CELTA English Teaching qualification and have been tutoring French as well as English as a Foreign Language for four years. My youngest student is nine and my oldest is 102! I love helping people learn or improve their French or English. Everyone learns differently and it’s so important to find out what works for them – it’s not just about grammar, verbs and sentences. It’s also about rhythm, sounds - trying things out and not being afraid to get it wrong. It’s about finding out why someone wants to learn and then helping them to achieve their goal, whether it is improving on GCSE mock grades, converting a barn in France, making themselves understood in a foreign culture, gaining a place at a UK university, interacting with business colleagues, or being more confident to look after children in a UK family. And it should be fun, where students look forward to their class and improving their skills. If I can achieve that, then it makes my day. Merci and thank you! My lessons are interactive, varied in pace and content, and driven by what the student wants. This is as diverse as supporting formal education, improving exam grades, filling gaps from missed learning, learning for fun, or employment and relocation requirements. Flexibility is key. Every class fits each student's needs. By asking the right questions I get to know where they are strong, where they feel they need support and most importantly how they learn. We set realistic goals together and this makes the learning process enjoyable and leads to measurable results. You always remember a good teacher. Mr Vent taught me French and Spanish at school and encouraged me to take these subjects at degree level. He was totally inspirational as a teacher and I now use some of his methods in the lessons I teach. I want to be that someone that people think of when they talk about their language journey, and I do my utmost to make sure that my classes are memorable, effective and unique. I have a BA Honours degree in French and Spanish I have been tutoring French in person and online for 5 years In a formal education setting, I teach from beginner, to GCSE/IGCSE in both AQA and Edexcel boards. I am also teaching professionals relocating for work purposes, beginners who have 'always wanted to learn French', and those with French partners hoping to impress their in-laws, to name but a few. In English I am CELTA qualified and teach English as a Foreign Language for Cambridge exams. I support students in their IELTS studies and exam preparations. I am currently tutoring non-English speakers in their spoken English fluency and pronunciation for use in a university lecturing environment. I also teach Business English in corporates to improve students' email and letter writing, telephone techniques as well as small talk, a much overlooked but vital part of today's business culture. Feedback is wonderful to receive - here are some examples of what some of my students have said: "I have made great progress in French with Vanessa. Not only do I feel better informed about the French language and culture. Most importantly I now feel able to speak confidently, which was my goal" "Vanessa is such a great teacher. She has been so kind, patient and understanding with a beginner like me. I would definitely choose Vanessa to be my teacher again" "Vanessa tailored the course perfectly... I thoroughly enjoyed our online sessions and appreciated her patience when we were trying to remember things learnt long ago, as well as things forgotten in less than a couple of weeks" My recent GCSE French students have moved up 2 grades from their mock exams - this makes teaching them very rewarding for me and they can see the results of their hard work.
