A bit about Elliot A

I am an experienced tutor of GCSE English Literature/Language, A Level English Literature and the ELAT (Oxbridge English admissions test). I am familiar with a variety of exam boards from AQA, OCR, Edexcel and WJEC. I am adaptable and familiar with many set texts including An Inspector Calls, Of Mice and Men, Macbeth, Romeo & Juliet, Unseen Poetry and more. I have also taught 15-17 creative writing, plus preparation before GCSEs. With my sessions, I aim to work closely with my students, figuring out with them how they think the time will be spent most effectively. For many of my students, this is often in revising key themes or going over exam technique. It is often the case that the students have great ideas and minds, they just are not familiar with the scheme of assessment and how to approach through a question. I hope to encourage an appreciation and enjoyment with the subject that goes beyond preparing for the exam, while also instilling confidence that their hard work will be rewarded by the sometimes confusing mark schemes. In structuring my lessons, often using a topic they are familiar with, we can go through past exam papers, examiner reports and mark schemes to see how we can effectively make sure we are hitting marks, so that students can feel better prepared to put their ideas to paper and know they will be rewarded for it. Additionally, for areas like unseen extracts, I enjoy using resources like No Fear Shakespeare and different youtube adaptations of the scenes to help make Shakespeare more approachable, so that it seems less daunting to students. This way, rather than panicking about language being unfamiliar, students can feel more confident that they can approach these texts. With all my students, I really want to tailor it to their style of learning and how they can specifically improve, as I think this is important in helping them get the most out of these lessons. I am a recent graduate of the University of Cambridge who has been tutoring for years alongside studying English. As someone from a state-school background, I am passionate about access and engaging students with literature, when this previously might have felt difficult. I enjoy how broad literature can be, as well as how understanding the social, cultural and historical contexts of a text can illuminate it further. As a tutor, I hope to help make studying English a less formulaic task and instead open students eyes to how open this subject can be, as well as preparing them with mark schemes to be familiar with how the exam will be formatted so they can have confidence in their work that it will be rewarded. While I am flexible and open to tutor most areas, some of my specialty topics include: -Helping Shakespeare become more accessible -GCSE exam technique (particularly AQA English Language & Literature) -Engaging with social, political and historical context to boost students to top marks
