A bit about Graeme

I have been tutoring and lecturing since 2014. I bring a combination of academic excellence with professional expertise, and I have also worked as a professional bookkeeper, working with a range of different clients and businesses. I currently work in a college of Further Education and have done 1:1 tutoring for a few organisations, with experience of students from the ages of 14+ right up to and beyond the age of 65. I specialise in standard bookkeeping and accounting procedures for sole traders, limited companies and partnerships. I also specialise in marketing, project management and setup for businesses, with a wide range of knowledge concerning legislation and best practices for businesses. Seeing a student of any age grow in their learning and understanding is always a thrill and a pleasure. It is very satisfying to see those moments where something 'clicks' in a student's head. I greatly enjoy the fact that what I do changes people's careers and lives, giving them new options for moving forward. I am an AAT-qualified bookkeeper with the relevant AAT qualifications (level 2 and 3) and professional knowledge, and I have a Masters in Professional Practice in Education (Merit) from the University of Central Lancashire. I am a lecturer in accounting and business, who has also taught mentoring and teacher education. This means that I bring a combination of academic excellence and professional know-how to my sessions with students, helping them with real-world learning rather than just abstract concepts. I also run my own business and bring that knowledge and expertise to how and what I teach. My teaching style is based on practice, practice, practice, as well as genuine engagement with students. Research tells us that retrieval practice (lots of practice questions and an opportunity to put knowledge into practice) is a vital component in successful learning. I also use real-world examples as far as possible, and try to inject fun into what is often seen by outsiders as a dull (not to me!) subject. My specialisms are in teaching AAT accounting and BTEC business, although I have successfully taught other exam boards to a curriculum, and can adjust what is needed on request. I enjoy playing piano and walking. I also collect first edition books and enjoy reading about economics and history. Students enjoy that I bring a calm and relaxed approach to the learning environment, and the effort that I put in to helping students to understand difficult concepts through real-world examples. Students appreciate that I try to make fun, what can sometimes seem like a dry and difficult subject. Students also appreciate that I go the extra mile in trying to help them to understand the concepts, rules and processes of bookkeeping and accounting.
