A bit about Madelyn S

I specialise in teaching American and British literature and composition skills at the GCSE and university level. With almost four years of experience lecturing and one-to-one tutoring, I can help students better understand material they have read for class and construct essays that will reflect their understandings of these texts. I hold a Masters degree Gothic literature which includes the novels Jane Eyre, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Frankenstein, Great Expectations, and A Christmas Carol. I am also well-versed in Pride and Prejudice and the works of Shakespeare. I started tuturoing one-to-one in 2013 at my undergraduate university's Writing Centre. After taking time off to pursue a Masters degree, I returned to lecturing and tutoring at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln in the United States from 2016 - 2018. Since then I have tutored and provided feedback on written work on and off while working on my PhD in English Literature. Although I have a background in lecturing, I prefer a more collaborative approach to teaching and tutoring. While I have knowledge of the subject and an expertise on what teachers and markers are expecting in written work, it is extremely important that students find and are able to discuss or write about what -they- find interesting in a text. In other words, I do not want students to simply parrot my own ideas back to me as if they were their own; they should feel that I have helped -them- explore and expand -their own- ideas. I am part of my local amateur musical theatre group and perform in shows there once a year. I also have two cats and a dog, so I spend a lot of time playing and cuddling with them! When I was a lecturer in the United States, a student came to me after the very first class of a new semester and said they had never gotten an "A" in English but that they were determined to get one in my module. I was as determined to help them reach that goal! Throughout that semester, I worked very closely with the student, meeting with them about their essays multiple times beyond the other students and showing them how to access other resources within the university that would help them succeed. Each draft of their essay showed progress in their understanding of the text they chose *and* progress in how to write an essay about that text. By the end of the semester, they had definitely earned their "A". I was so proud, not just to see their hard work or to see them achieve a goal, but to see how their confidence grew as they learned.
