A bit about Kat Mac

I love teaching maths and it makes the best use of my skills and abilities. I have worked in different careers, but I returned to education because no other role gave me anywhere near the job satisfaction I get from helping people to learn. In addition to online private tuition, I teach GCSE and Functional Skills Maths in a further education college. In this role, I have designed and taught Level 2 and Level 3 maths courses for students on Access to Higher Education courses. For the last 2 years, my work has been one-to-one and online, using Zoom and Microsoft Teams. I began teaching maths 28 years ago but I have also worked as a software engineer and as an IT trainer. As a volunteer, I set up a computer drop-in workshop for Age Concern, in which I helped many older people to learn to computer skills. I have also taught computer skills to classes at a local Salvation Army centre. I am based in Southport in the North West of England. For the last 8 years, I have taught GCSE Maths (Foundation and Higher) and Functional Skills Math (Level 1 and Level 2). The exam board I am most experienced in is Edexcel. I love the communication involved in teaching maths, how it starts out with students looking puzzled and then the joy and sense of achievement they demonstrate when their understanding clicks into place. I like being able to find where the gaps are in my learners' understanding so I can clarify. Teaching maths is a conversation, which is different with every student. Here are some examples of what my students have said: "You’ve been a wonderful teacher. You always explained everything in a great way, understanding that we all learn differently and providing lots of different techniques to learn and offering support to all! And you’re a lovely person on top of it all. Couldn’t wish for a better teacher!" “We are so pleased with the progress Isabelle's made with numeracy, she's ahead of where they projected she would be which is thanks to the time she spends with you.” "I just wanted to thank you for being such a brilliant maths teacher for me this past year. Just wish I’d have had you when I was a little girl throughout primary school and beyond, as would have made all the difference to my maths! I can’t thank you enough for your support." "Hi Kat, just wanted to say thank you so much for your help and support this year, you were an amazing teacher and I am very grateful! I had a great time doing 1 to 1’s with you." "Thank you for everything! When I started Pre-Access/Access, I was a bit reluctant returning to learning. However, the past 2 years had been wonderfully inspiring and that’s thanks to you. You have been amazing part of my academic journey. I wish you all the best." “Excellent tutor, very punctual. My daughter has been very pleased with the tuition given by Kat and we would highly recommend her.” “I used to hate maths at school but I am enjoying it now and I want to study it at Level 2.” "I'm absolutely buzzing that I received a 4. Thanks for all your hard work over the past couple of years to get me to this point. Coming to your classes have been so much fun and I enjoyed it very much. Thanks again for everything." “Our son Fraser was predicted a D in his GCSE, but with Kat's help, he achieved a B.” "I got a 5 in Maths 🙂 so I'm happy. Now I'm planning my next steps. Thankyou so much for your wonderful tutelage. Thankyou again for being a wonderful teacher, I hope to see you again 🙂🙂 "Pass, fail, lose or draw, whatever the outcome, it’s been a pleasure attending your lessons. The enthusiasm you show is a lesson in itself! which, hopefully, we’ll all be able to draw on." “Kat is a first class tutor. She is both kind and considerate, and knows how to treat young people who have little confidence in their academic abilities. Thank you so much for your time and patience with my daughter - she is finally beginning to believe in herself!” "Just wanted to say a massive thank you to you for getting me through my maths. I couldn't have done it without you. Thanks to you I have now got a new job in a high school and I support year 8 class with all the lessons including maths!!!!!! So thank you again for everything." “After getting a grade D on three attempts at GCSE, I have now passed with a C, thanks Kat!” “I needed to get a C at GCSE to be able to do teacher training, but I could not get more than a D despite 5 attempts. Private tuition with Kat made the difference."
