A bit about Wayne L

I specialise in science, with A levels in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Physics followed by eight years of experience in advanced physics, I have never lost my passion for this area! Given the nature of my background and research, my greatest strengths are physics and maths (and further maths) since I have used theses skills every day for the past eight years, but chemistry is also hugely important in my field since I study material properties! In addition to being well practised in these fields, I am also in an excellent position to provide context for why the contents of the syllabus is useful and real world examples which help students learn. I was one of the pioneers who set up an outreach programme called 'Binding Blocks' to teach nuclear physics to students from primary school up to A level. The students build a 3D model of the so called 'nuclear chart' during the session out of lego for an immersive and hands-on learning experience which aids understanding and description of the physics. This approach is also part of what makes the session so tuneable for different age groups, with the primary school level learning of the concept of atoms, while A level students can easily apply equations and challenging concepts to the model. This programme has now spread to multiple universities and has been running for multiple years for hundreds of students from varying backgrounds and age groups. I can't wait to see where it goes in the future! I have experience teaching from primary school age up to university degree level, I can teach any of the exam boards at GCSE and A level for the subjects I offer, since I have taught these in the past and have plenty of experience in the areas taught at degree level and beyond. Science and Mathematics are notorious for confusing people when they are not taught clearly, so I love seeing a students face light up when they understand something challenging! I am a particularly patient person so I am more than happy to describe and explain a topic in different ways until a student understands fully, which is something I think teachers in a classroom setting can struggle with due to time constraints. Additionally, I love having debates about hypothetical scenarios when talking about science, it develops an intricate understanding of the principles while often being intriguing and fun. I am very aware that no two students are the same and that most school classrooms are around 20-35 people, which means everything has to be taught under the assumption that everyone learns the same. I would thus describe my teaching style as adaptable, I am just as comfortable prepping questions and discussing exam technique as I am teaching the course and having a discussion. My style centres around clarity, I start a session by asking the student what they have learnt since our last meeting, followed by an outline of the plan for the day, confirming if the student is happy with the suggested progress. It is important to me that any student I have will understand the direction we are taking and why it is useful, I ensure any practise question we do is relevant to what the student may be struggling with at the time. I end every session with a small reflection and a discussion of what we should look forward to in the next session, with the hope that the student will be as involved in the direction and content as possible for maximum tailored benefit.
