A bit about Catherine D

I am a fully qualified and very experienced Physics and Science teacher with over 17 years of teaching in schools. I have been a Head of Physics, an Assistant Headteacher and a Deputy Headteacher and an A Level examiner (for OCR). I can teach Science and Maths to KS3, Combined Science and Physics to GCSE and Physics to A Level, and Maths to Foundation GCSE and Functional Skills Level 2. I have experience of supporting learners with SEN, specifically ASD, Autism and SEMH needs. I have a 1st class degree in Physics and have taught A Level Physics for the full 17 years of my career. I have tutored students on a 1:1 basis before at GCSE and A Level and enjoyed much success in my teaching and tutoring. I have been a Designated Safeguarding Lead, so I ensure student safety and wellbeing is at the top of my agenda at all times. I always wanted to be a teacher but after getting my degree in Physics I worked in industry for a couple of years designing and engineering radiation shielding products. I then retrained as a teacher and have been doing that ever since! I love working with young people and helping them to 'get' things, especially things that they are finding difficult. We will normally check where we are up to, how what we have already learnt fits with what we are doing today and then introduce the new topic. We will chat through the new content and then get on with doing some practice questions. We will look at experiments online to help us understand the content and do some practice exam questions too. I work my students hard but we always have time for a chat to get to know each other too as I know the basis for outstanding results is always a warm and productive teacher-student relationship. I have taught a variety of exam boards over the years - most recently I have taught AQA at GCSE and OCR at A Level but I am confident in any. I am currently in the process of applying to be an examiner for the Cambridge board at A Level - I have examined and been a Team Leader for OCR A Level Physics in the past. I have GCSEs in the usual subjects, A* in Maths and Sciences, and A Levels in Maths (A), Physics (A), and Chemistry (A). I got a 1st class degree in Physics from the University of Liverpool. I have done lots of training whilst I have been a teacher, most recently completing my National Professional Qualification in Senior Leadership and my Designated Safeguarding Lead training. I have tutored on and off throughout my 17 years of teaching, at GCSE and A Level, but am now looking to do more and help more students.
