A bit about Paula

Hi, my name is Paula and I have been teaching science for 25 years. For the last 15 years I have taught, course managed and examined BTEC Applied and Forensic Science courses and as a tutor, I specialise in exam preparation and coursework support, working towards distinctions in your BTEC units. I have taught for all the main exam boards such as Edexcel, Pearson, AQA, OCR and OCN. I have experience teaching KS3 Science, GCSE Single/Combined/Trilogy Sciences and A level Chemistry and Biology. I am also an advanced BTEC Applied and Forensic Science specialist, which has included examiner roles. I also and teach chemistry and biology at degree level, with specific emphasis on Forensic chemistry and biology. Following postgraduate studies in Forensic Science, then a short stint in science communication and publishing, I found that helping others understand science was something I was passionate about. I enjoy breaking down the barriers of science and feedback from my students has been that they find my lessons supportive. If they do not understand a concept, it is not skirted over but revisited, practiced and adapted until the learning is sound. This makes application of knowledge in the coming exams much easier. I have a PGCE in Secondary Chemistry from the University of Birmingham. I also possess a BSc in Pathobiology from the University of Reading and an MSc in Forensic Science from Kings College London. My teaching experience spans 20 years including positions in the state and private sector. Most recently I taught in an FE college, teaching level 3 science. I also taught on degree courses in forensic investigation where I taught forensic medicine, physical chemistry and dissertation preparation. I start by celebrating the knowledge you already have and then build on that with discussion and practice questions. It is through this activity that I identify where you most need the support, and I will structure future lessons around that. I will not move on to a new topic until we are both 100% sure you have understood the previous one.
