A bit about Brian H

I specialise in GCSE and A-Level classical Civilisation/Ancient History. I have been tutoring privately and in various Oxford schools for nine years. I know from my own experience at school that students want to study those subjects which have inspirational teachers. Enthusiasm for a subject is vital and students who enjoy their subject will always perform far better than those who do not. Bearing this in mind, I focus on building on that interest and developing confidence in their knowledge of the course material. I try to make the subject more manageable for my students by focusing on one thing at a time. I monitor my tutees' performance very closely but make sure that in our lessons they feel comfortable and are able to apply themselves fully to the topic at hand. I have a BA in Archaeology/Ancient History and an MPhil in Greek Archaeology, as well as a CELTA for EFL teaching. I first started tutoring when I moved to Greece 20 years ago as a teacher of English as a Foreign Language. When I moved back to Oxford 10 years ago I began teaching Classical Civilisation at Oxford Tutorial College and have carried on tutoring both Classics and EFL since then. I love teaching Classical Civilisation because I believe the art, architecture, literature and politics of ancient Greece and Rome are vital to our understanding of the modern world, which owes them so much, but values them so little. I enjoy communicating this relevance to classics students, and helping them to appreciate how the civilisations studied have helped shape the world we live in today; and how we need to learn more about these ancient societies in order to appreciate the things they have given us. I have experience teaching OCR GCSE and A-Level Classical Civilisation / Ancient History to small groups and to individuals.
