A bit about Simon C

I trained as a maths teacher in 1995 but found alternative employment after qualifying. Since then, I have worked mostly as a computer programmer, which is what I do now, with some engineering before that. I have always enjoyed maths and it has formed a big part of my working life. I started tutoring in autumn 2021, and now strike a balance between working on programming projects, usually in Excel, and maths tuition. I like the way that maths relates to the real world and promotes critical thinking. It can be used to measure a property, whether it is weights, lengths, probability or data analysis. I particularly like it when a student is able to grasp a problem or concept that they had found difficult. I know from my own experience how it feels to understand something that was previously problematic, and it is always good to see somebody else making that progress. My style can vary with the age and ability of the student, and also it can depend on the amount of advanced warning I have on the required topic. I usually base my material around textbooks, to ensure that I am working at the correct level. If I know the topic in advance, I will usually have some sort of presentation. With younger students I will use shorter explanations and have more exercises to work through. Older students can stay focused for longer while a topic is demonstrated, and they may like to take notes. When I am working with GCSE students, I will use past papers and individual exam questions, some of the time. Past exam papers can be good for identifying topics for further work. I have a large number of exam questions sorted by topic, so I can work through an explanation of a requested subject area and follow up with relevant exam questions for practice. When it comes to exam revision I have past papers from AQA, Edexcel and OCR. I find there is not a lot of difference between the boards in maths and it is the understanding that is important when it comes to answering exam questions. I teach from years 7 to 11. I have also taught adults.
