A bit about Scott S

I actually worked in Television for 20 years before moving into Education for the last 8 years. I have been teaching full time for the last 6 years and had extensive experience of running online lessons during the COVID lockdowns. I love how English as a subject can give us an understanding of the wider world around us and some of the big questions in life. My favourite author at the moment is Colson Whitehead who is the first black writer to have won the Pulitzer twice. I also have a great love of graphic novels, science fiction and fantasy. I paddleboard, have a Boarder Terrier and play the Ukulele. I have taught and marked for AQA and Edexcel GCSE English Language and Literature Paper 1 and 2. I have also taught GCSE Media Studies and have extensive industry experience. I am a qualified teacher with 6 years teaching experience and have also marked and moderated recently for AQA so I know what the examiner is looking for. I hope to bring texts alive for my students and to help them gain confidence in analytical responses by drawing on their own emotional intelligence. I teach a toolkit of skills to help with crafting formal or creative responses to extended writing. I have taught Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, The Tempest and A Midsummer's Night Dream. I have also taught An Inspector Calls, A Christmas Carol and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I am confident in the Power and Conflict anthologies for poetry and can also help you tackle unseen poetry. I like to engage students with easy win activities and then be specific about the skills that will be worked on in each session. When exploring texts I will try and prompt you to making your own interpretations but will try and provoke a deeper understanding of the text. I will try and train you to see and explain things that other students might miss. I will support you at first with writing frames and key words and then gradually take these away until you feel you have mastered the skill. In one to one sessions I see misunderstandings or gaps in knowledge as very positive things as they can be easily explained in different ways until you really feel that you can understand things. You will always finish a lesson consolidating and reflecting on what you have learned and can now do better. I believe in making the curriculum accessible to all students by scaffolding work to reach the top tier of the marking schemes. I will introduce key terms and subject terminology gradually so that the student can feel confident in their usage and communicate with precision and flair. I believe that we all learn at different rates and that the joy of 1:1 tuition is in being able to quickly address any misconceptions and work through any barriers to learning. Teaching for me is about empowering the student to feel clever. I have taught AQA and Edexcel and am an examiner for AQA. I am a secondary school English teacher with 6 years teaching experience. I have taught Years 7 through to 11 and have had successful Progress 8 scores for my Year 11 GCSE results. Although I have left full time education, I still do supply teaching at my local comprehensive to keep my teaching practice up to speed. I often ask for feedback at the end of a year's teaching of my classes. A general theme of their responses is that they find my lessons fun and appreciate my dry sense of humour. They also like it that I am not afraid to sometimes go off on a tangent if something interesting comes up that they want to explore.
