A bit about Nicole L

I an experienced teacher after having worked in different settings, with a variety of different learners. I have specialised in English, lead a cohort of teachers and established relationships with learners who needed a boost. My teaching experience has gone from assisting and guiding ASC learners in their bespoke way, I have taught in an SEBD/SEMH and further education setting, as well as working along side multi-agencies to expand knowledge bases who are in the care setting. My work is done around the leaner and their needs. I am an advocate that each learner has different learning styles, and needs different adaptations to establish their preferred learning culture. I specialise in English Language at a GCSE level with the exam board AQA - I have been teaching with them for over 6 years. However, I understand the English curriculum fully throughout the Key stages, an over AQQ, OCR and City and guilds. I teach functional skills at all levels for all ages. Lastly, I can also teach primary school learners too. From what my leaner has told me in their introduction session, and what we have discussed their needs and wants to be, I will always have an agenda/a plan and what I feels needs to be covered in the lesson to achieve the end goal. However, I will never continue with a lesson if the learner is not engaged. I will stick to what needs to be taught, but how I teach it will change. For example: the original ‘plan’ of a game, that I feel the leaner is not engaging with, will change to a ‘I do you do’ task. Every lesson will be different for each leaner. I have tutored since my first teaching post around 6 years ago. This started with an ASC learner who participated well and was eager to learn in my lessons. Therefore, I was approached to tutor him one hour a week. Reluctant at first, but always up for a challenge, I put my right foot forward and didn’t stop until the proud moment of that learner passing their GCSE happened. Realisation hit me that i can have more of an involvement and enhance learners knowledge base on a 1-1 level and help everyone to achieve. I have been told on many occasions I am captivating, I can obtain a learners attention for the appropriate period of time to enable them to understand the topic. I also, like to explain the topic, in various different ways, again to enable the learner to succeed. Also, I like my lessons to be interactive, this way it gets them involved without having that ‘normal’ classroom PowerPoint approach. I live this question because I think most people can relate. My very own form tutor and I, didn’t have a great relationship. She connotated me as the ‘loud, out spoken’ one of the group. When in actual fact, there were underlying issues about myself I didn’t want to confront and she didn’t take the time to understand (not that I ever expected her to). Anyway, she told me I wouldn’t make it in life. After that, I was determined to become a teacher and to show her I can succeed. I wanted to have a completely different approach to teaching as she had to. I wanted to not only teach but make an educational difference to individuals. Not by becoming a friend, as I think there’s a very fine professional line, but by being an understanding ear and a positive light in their life to give them that ‘can do’ attitude.
