A bit about Hester M

I care about each and every one of my students. Getting to know them, the way they learn, and their strengths has always been the core to good teaching and success. I have been a teaching English for three years and I have taught KS3, GCSE, English Language and English Literature at A-Level. I had my own challenges in education, and that's why I know how essential it is to have an empathetic and engaging teacher who not only listen to your wants and needs but adapts their approach accordingly. I have experience with whole class teaching, targeted intervention for small groups, and one to one tutoring. I have particular experience tutoring students who have struggled in a school environment and decided to be educated at home. These students have often lost confidence in their own abilities, however, with a little encouragement and the right teaching, they have flourished, and all achieved their desired grades. I specialise in English Language and English Literature at GCSE, and English Language and English Literature at A-Level. I am a marker for AQA. This means I know exactly what the exam board are looking for! Every year I mark papers, I learn more about not only the examination process, but also the subject. However, I am also familiar with and able to accommodate other exam boards. I like to build a friendly, comfortable and professional environment for my students so that they feel they are able to ask questions, make mistakes, and feel safe to flourish. Once I have gauged my pupil's wants, needs and ability, I will be able to tailor each lesson specifically to my pupil. Typically, I start the lesson with a 5 minuet recall activity, recapping on previous knowledge. I then discuss the key objectives for the session and gauge how confident the pupil currently feels regarding these objectives. This is followed by a series of tasks which encompass, build upon and enhance key skills that the pupil needs for success. At the end of the session, we will re-visit the objectives and do a task to check they have been accomplished. If the student and their parent agree it is appropriate, I will set short homework tasks between sessions. Some people find English a bit stuffy and see studying it as a chore, and truthfully, when you look at basic exam requirements typed in neat black letters on mark schemes, you can see why. But English is so much more than that. Language is an amazing thing; it can create worlds and allow us to access and embrace the world around us. It enables us to communicate with our family and friends and, to an extent, dictates our future. I have just arranged for every student in Year 7 at my school to receive a free book of their choice, because everyone deserves to own and have access to their own book. The sheer excitement on my students faces when they heard this is a visible reminder of why I love my subject so much. Likewise, looking at the expression on a particular Yr. 11's face, who has always tried her best and always struggled, as she understands and enjoys Macbeth is amazing. She understands why Lady Macbeth famously declares 'unsex me here, And fill me from the crown to the toe top-full Of direst cruelty!' She understands how women were considered at the time and the role of gender withing the play and, most importantly, how it can relate to the present day. She understands how she can use language to decode the world around her: I will never stop being amazed at the opportunities English can provide.
