A bit about Ozgun M

I am Özgün, recently graduated with First Class degree in MSci Mathematics with Economics at University College London (UCL). Through studying at one of the world’s best universities, I learned that very few of the brightest minds also have the ability to pass on their knowledge well through teaching. During my school years and into university, I made summary notes for all my subjects to help me revise and review the content effectively. In turn, I became confident in my ability to teach myself and others as I discovered how best to transform often inaccessible mathematical language into concise intuitive steps. Being immersed in UCL’s challenging curriculum taught me how to simplify complex mathematics in my own words. If you want to be a good tutor, the starting point is to be good at self-teaching. Every sturdy building relies on strong foundations to hold it up. I am firm in the belief that being able to teach oneself effectively facilitates them to have strong foundations for tutoring I have experience in IGCSE and A level systems as I did 9 IGCSE’s and 4 A-levels. I did Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Economics and Turkish and achieved all A*’s in my A-levels. Knowing the system well enhanced my ability to teach these courses. During my secondary education, I was always helping my friends to achieve better grades and it helped to upgrade my tutoring skills. I have been a private teacher for the past 3 years and have a high A*-A rate amongst my students. On top of that, I have a full DBS check and work as a Teaching Assistant at a Senior school. I provide tailored lessons to my students. During lessons, I observe and check how my students understand and based on that information I decide how to teach. Of course, I also ask my students whether they prefer me to teach in a certain way. They love how I concentrate on their weak points and challenge them with harder questions that I sometimes made up. If I see a student that is interested in the subject I always give further details and what to expect in the future. As I am a mathematician and an economist myself, I don't only teach the syllabuses, but I teach how to be a mathematician or an economist! I always provide interactive teaching. If you just provide the facts for students, it is hard for them to understand everything fully and it is unlikely that they will retain the information in the long term. Our brains have to actively work to improve information processing so providing exercises and working through solved examples enables students to reach their full capacity in understanding. My style of teaching will be based on these three key stages providing knowledge, solving problems together and giving countless exercises to my students. Furthermore, I always provide diagrams and graphs, if possible, to enrich the students with the ability to envisage problems more confidently. My speciality is tutoring GCSE/A-level Economics and Mathematics for all exam boards. Last year, I had a 93% rate of A*-A band in GCSE/A-level Mathematics and Economics. I can teach Mathematics and Economics at every level until the degree level.
