A bit about Nya J

Hi, I'm Nya, I'm in the first year of a two-year master's at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands but originally I'm from Devon. My master's is in Molecular Medicine and Innovative Treatment and I receive a full academic scholarship. I graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a first-class degree in Biological Sciences (Molecular Genetics). I studied Biology (Edexcel), Chemistry (OCR), and Maths (AQA) at A-Level and received A*, A, A respectively. Though I have studied lots of areas of Biology and Chemistry, I am particularly interested in Genetics and Immunology. I love how intricate the human body is and how something so small can contain such complex systems. I found exams stressful and challenging but with enough past paper practice and revision, they are manageable. I applied to university to study biochemistry and was fortunate enough to get 5 offers. My firm choice was Edinburgh with an offer of A*, A, A to go straight into the second year of the course and my insurance was the University of Manchester. I really enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, and climbing which makes the Netherlands ideal. I travel as much as possible; in my gap year, I traveled around Southeast Asia for 8 months and will never forget the incredible experiences I had. I am trained in genetics and immunology. My Bachelor's degree at the University of Edinburgh specialised in Molecular genetics and my elective courses were mainly immunological or biochemical. I am now studying Molecular medicine and innovative treatment at the University of Groningen in the Netherland. During my Master's I am specialising in infection and immunology focussing on bacterial biology. First I will get an understanding of what the student wants out of the sessions. It's important for me to know what areas the student needs help with. Then I will find lots of exam questions or make my own with correct structure to first go through showing how the question should be approached and answered then allow them to attempt a question with prompts if needed. I will start each lesson with a recap of the last session and record their confidence/ability to track improvement then move on the days topic. I will help with content understanding, exam technique and basic Maths. At the end of each topic I will make them take a short test which I will mark and record any areas they still struggle with. I will go over these areas in a new way to try to help them understand it better. I will use a variety of methods to teach - visual, audio, games etc. - but ultimately I will try to tailor the lessons to the individual student. I started tutoring when I was doing AS-levels. It started as volunteering to help fellow AS-level or GCSE students. I enjoyed tutoring so much that I decided to start tutoring online which I did for 3 years throughout my Bachelor's. Over these 3 years, I taught over 350 hours of alevel chemistry and biology across different boards (OCR, Edexcel, and AQA) on another tutoring platform (mytutor). Out of these 350 hours I received an average of 5/5 star reviews. I also helped tutor first-year students at the University of Edinburgh.
