A bit about Matthew B

I have eighteen years of experience working with students in both the American and UK systems as a classroom teacher, private tutor, mock interviewer, and revision course instructor. I always integrate study skills and exam techniques into my instruction so that students not only acquire the information, but also are able to improve their scores on assessments. I specialise in A-Level/AP/IB Chemistry, Biology, and Physics with an emphasis on exam technique and high-efficiency learning techniques. I normally begin with questions or problems from the previous lesson to gauge retention. I also like to go over difficult homework problems. I then present information via google jams with a variety of different images and video content. Students are always encouraged to ask questions as I move through the material. I periodically have timed exam questions for the students to do during the lesson to test their attainment. 2004 I love relating the material I teach to the world around us. With climate change, pollution, and pandemics challenging human civilisation, science can allow us to develop solutions to make the planet a better place for future generations. I also like to use the core science to equip students with media literacy so they can properly interpret claims with data and reason. Students learn by doing and by continual assessment. My teaching philosophy involves lots of homework problems and worked examples. I also like students to understand why certain answers are incorrect. I enjoy finding methods for enabling students to become lifelong learners. I make sure the students have just as much time doing example problems as they do listening to me present the information. Students appreciate my honesty and ability to tailor recommendations to their talents and aspirations. I have an undergraduate degree from Columbia University and a BS equivalent in Pre-Health Sciences. I helped several students achieve Oxbridge admission after months of hard work and encouragement. My experience working as an Explainer at the Exploratorium in the 1990s catalysed my interest in science education. Founded by Frank Oppenheimer, one of the designers of the atomic bomb, the museum blended core science with a mission to inspire students to always consider the ethics of a scientific endeavour. I am an organic gardener. I grow vegetables and 50 different varieties of flowers. I also am an avid swimmer and love to bike. I am deeply involved in the global movement to protect the planet from environmental destruction. That is why I use a bike for transport and use trains for foreign travel whenever possible I teach AQA, Edexcel, OCR, Cambridge, IB, and AP Chemistry, Biology, and Physics.
