A bit about Charlene A

My approach is warm, safe, friendly and fun - I genuinely enjoy being around children and young adults and have no problem with behavioral or processing issues. I love helping students collect as many exam marks as possible and have had lots of successful GCSE school classes where students were predicted to fail and ended up with a strong pass! I have taught in schools all throughout London as well as in Milan with the British Council. English Literature Exam Skills English Language Exam Skills Writing Paragraphs/ timed and untimed Analysing Literature/Literary Theory Literacy Skills Creative Writing Skills Primary and KS3 Literacy/Writing Skills English as a Foreign Language Adults English as a Foreign Language Kids Business English Conversational English I have been teaching in schools and tutoring since 2009 in the UK and Europe. My lessons are centred around building on previous learning and gaining confidence steps. I begin with a recap or focus on some independent student learning that has been prepared, at least 20 minutes of the lesson is dedicated to the student producing written or analytical work which is then either self-assessed or assessed by myself. There is always room for a little chat about how the student is finding the content or exam prep in general, not to mention how their day is going! This information is used to decipher the trajectory of the lesson in order to get the best from their developing skill set. Flexible learning interventions often take place where a student is struggling with a topic or skill. English is first and foremost a creative subject. It allows students to consider and respond to relevant topics and contextual themes through imagination and productivity. I love nurturing a student's writing style and helping them to build confidence in what they can produce independently, to take ownership of their creativity and analytical skills. I love teaching Shakespeare and Poetry. Fun!! Engaging, relevant to the student's personality, skill set and developing confidence. I have very high expectations where exam criterion are concerned and will not provide sugar coated feedback on any level if I don't believe it is warranted. That said, I believe in encouragement and praise where students are making the right steps and showing potential. I provide a lot of modelling and examples of what I expect to be produced so the student can get used to the expectation ahead of them. Watching confidence progress over time and students begin to appreciate, like and maybe sometimes love the subject they once couldn't stand or were really worried about. I like being a mentor figure and providing support where possible. I love working with young people and giving them an opportunity for their voices to be heard and acknowledged.
