A bit about Alice C

As a maths graduate, my specialist subject is indeed mathematics at KS3 and GCSE level. I regularly look for ways to develop my teaching and over the past 5 years I have been training to work with students with specific learning differences such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, autism and ADHD. I am near to qualifying as a Specialist Study Skills tutor for students in college and University but the skills I have gained can be easily applied to the younger students I usually work with. Upon commencing this course, I intend to complete a Level 7 Dyslexia course with qualifies me as an assessor of dyslexia. Maths is a wonderful, albeit tricky, subject and I love demonstrating how it links to the real world. I take the aspects that my students find difficult and make them fun and engaging by linking them to tangible concepts (circles = cake in my lessons). My favourite part of a lesson is seeing the light bulb moment for a student when a concept clicks for them! I love how every lesson turns out differently and I encourage the most interested students to explore the fascinating extra-curricular topics in maths (my keen interest is cryptography). I pride myself on having the ability to teach the same topic to two students completely differently - ensuring I am meeting their learning needs whilst still covering the relevant criteria for understanding. Currently, I primarily teach KS3 and GCSE Maths for AQA, Edexcel and OCR. I have the capability to teach primary maths, but this is usually when the student has a specific learning difference such as dyslexia or dyscalculia. I am happy to teach Functional Skills Maths Levels 1 and 2 and Further Maths Level 2 if requested. I began tutoring whilst studying for a maths degree as a way to earn income as a student. I didn't realise at the time how much I would enjoy being an educator, and 8 years later I am a full-time tutor and assistive technology trainer. I've taught all age ranges (5 to adult learners) and covered a variety of subjects and topics (all related to maths). I have helped children pass entrance tests, teenagers gain great GCSE and A Level grades, all whilst gaining confidence and building on exam techniques to aid current and future high attainment. Additionally, I've worked with adults studying for teaching, engineering and armed forces exams. During the first lockdown of 2020, I began working remotely with a girl in year 3 with significant difficulties in school numeracy and literacy. She was working at a year 2 level and was finding reading and spelling very difficult. The student was initially resistant to covering areas out of her comfort zone and I used a mixture of activities to encourage and develop her skills whilst she was not attending school during the lockdown. Now, two and a half years later, she has blossomed into a keen reader and has won awards for her reading at school; one of my proudest tutor achievements to date! I now see this student in person and she continues to impress me with her confidence in writing. She is suspected of having dyslexia and we have always used strategies that suit her learning style and needs.
