A bit about Andrew B

I started in 2015, as work was sporadic and "pensioner status" was looming! I'd often been told that I was "a natural teacher", and decided to give it a go. It's been very rewarding, and after the hiatus caused by Covid-19, I have more students and am teaching more subjects than ever. I've always enjoyed helping people, beginning as a young man when assisting the local Motorcyclist Training Scheme. Later I helped friends and relatives with driving lessons, and was told that I was better than a qualified instructor! In Saudi Arabia I wrote a training manual on a computer system for my staff, and they all found it simple to understand. Working at an advertising/design agency in the UK, I explained the use of apostrophes to a young man, who informed me that I'd succeeded in five minutes where his schoolteachers had consistently failed. Many parents are surprised to learn that I haven't been a teacher all my life. I'm a friendly, encouraging and very informal person. Students seem to take to me because I'm so different from the "schoolteacher" they were expecting. I've had some great relationships with both my students and their parents. Since the first Lockdown I've found myself teaching small groups and tutoring online. But I've particularly enjoyed helping students "catch up", initially through the Government's NTP "Catch-up" scheme. There are many reasons for students having fallen behind: obviously, missed schooling through Covid is one, but I've also found myself assisting those who've been removed school because they were being bullied, because of problems with Literacy or Numeracy or specific aspects of a syllabus, and more recently, Special Needs. If children genuinely want to "catch up", I find that my patient, informal and encouraging style invariably brings positive results. Check out my testimonials on weybridge-home-tutor.co.uk As a former editor with world-famous publishers and internationally-published article writer, English is probably my principal subject. However, it wasn't long before I was approached to do Maths as well. I particularly enjoy helping kids who've been struggling with an aspect of the syllabus: it's so rewarding to hear them suddenly say, "Andrew, I understand it now!" I also offer Geography, History, Elementary French and Latin, (very) Elementary Spanish, and preparation for 11-Plus, SATs and School Entrance exams. Where possible, I try to complement the students' school lessons, rather than risking confusing them by heading off down a different "route". This is particularly useful in subjects like Maths, where they might be experiencing difficulties and falling behind; in such cases, I can help them catch up. However, I generally ask them and their parents if there are weak points that they'd like us to concentrate on. The "successes" vary. One boy achieved 120/120 in his SATs English exam, and 116/120 in the Maths section. Another student was most probably autistic, yet I managed to help him pass an entrance exam for a local independent school. Other students, especially girls, were very shy and nervous, yet relaxed and enjoyed the lessons in time, making good progress. That's another "success" in my book.
